The vet will tell you that it's okay so long as she comes back, she won't go far because of the kittens, and will probably only go out to use the bathroom, but you need to be careful because she'll still be in heat and could come back pregnant again. I kept Minx in after she had her babies and have only just let her back out again, she goes out for five minutes max, comes back to use the litter tray and then spend the rest of the day relaxing inside.

Right away...but she might get pregnant again right away. Kittens are only cute for a little while and often end up in shelters (no matter how good you think the owner is). You will have less trouble if you spay the mom 10 weeks after she has had the kittens. If you decide to do that though, make sure she stays home all through that time.

The cat or the kittens?
If you mean the cat - as soon as she is spayed. You will have to ask your vet about this one.
If you mean the kittens - not until they are 3 months old and have been treated for fleas, worms and have had BOTH courses of injections, and only under supervision in your garden. If you want to let them roam free, you will have to wait until they are 6 months old and have been neutered or spayed. If you are not keeping the kittens, you should not let them out at all.
You probably meant your mommy cat though - so you'll need to wait until she's fully weaned the kittens (about 5 weeks) and is spayed and fully vaccinated (vaccinations last for 1 year, so make sure she's had her injections in the last 12 months).

My stray that had adopted us had already I believe litters outside so she really had no choice but to find food outside. When she lived with us she went out if she wanted I trusted her to come back if the kittens were hungry. It just a matter of trust do you trust your cat to be sensible? If not refuse to let it out but do allow it time away from those kittens, its hard work looking after kittens all the time!

Some cats never come in. As long as the mother is nursing the kittens then let her do what she normally does during the day. Remember your not the boss the cat is.

I didnt know they were meant to stay in so a few days after my cat had her kittens she started going outside again. turns out they are meant to stay in for a good week or so incase they get pregnant again, apparently they are still very fertile and most likely to get pregnant in the first few weeks after having kittens.
Try and keep the mother in for as long as possible, its difficult especially as mine has always gone outside and doesnt use an indoor litter tray so ive had to almost train her again.
And if dont want her to get pregnant again, get her spayed as soon as possible! i think you will have to wait a few weeks anyway as the mother is still feeding the kittens.
Good luck

Mother Cat, As soon as she feels up to it
Kittens, After about 2/3 weeks but please make sure you get then innoculated asap, they are normally safe from their mothers milk for about 4/6 weeks but don't rely on it

Cats never should go out unsupervised. There are SO many reasons why.
1. Constantly getting pregnant if not spayed...your cat will come back pregnant again and again...why do you insist on having a kitten making machine?
2. Outdoor cats die by the thousands due to cars, animal attacks, diseases and other accidents every year.
3. Cats are not native to our eco-system, they destroy native wildlife.
