.."I kiss them on both cheeks knowing deep down as they kiss me back, that they'd think nothing of tearing myself to shreds. I'm not sure why I put up with it. Maybe for acceptance."

they'd think nothing of tearing myself to shreds. ...Does that mean they think about tearing her to shreds or don't? :S Thanks.

it's about being two-faced... unfortunately it's all too common.

Think about the last time you had to be kind and courteous to someone out of politeness... when you really just wanted to tell them what you thought of them.
Usually happens when someone is in a position of power.....

Think about 'popular' kids... and wanting to be a part of it...even though you don't like who they are...what they do... but you just long to be part of the "in" crowd.

It's about putting on a "polite" face.... and not expressing true feelings.....

People put on a face of friendship and pleasantness when inside they may truely dislike the person they are greeting. We all do it. We want to like and be liked by other people, but when we run into someone we don't care for, we still have to kiss them on both cheeks (a symbol of greeting a friend with no ill intentions), so that we can feel a part of society, a member of the group.

Paraphrase:
When I meet them they accept me with loving arms. I am kind and respectful. And they are too. But I am well aware that these actions are just those of a well trained actor. For I know they do not feel any love towards me. I dont know why I do it. Why I put up with it. Maybe just so I can be called one of them?

It is saying that people pretend to be your friend. They comfort you. And you go to them willingly. But you know that they do not really hold any of feelings of chumminess. They are fasle people. And you know it. But you still put up with it because well...everybody wants to feel as if they are somebody and this is the way you feel you can achieve that....

that is an amazing quote by the way!!!!

Social mores and "good" maners make hypocrits of most of us. instead of saying what we really think and doing what we really like, we do and say what is socially acceptable. We know that other people are doing the same thing. This is one of the prices we pay for a civilized society. The people who do not conform to these pleasant fictions are generally outcasts, or they are considered to be eccentric, outlandish, or just plain rude. The speaker in your quotation is right when he/she says that we do these things for acceptance.
