They most certainly are not. Hartz Mountain Co. has a lot of lawsuits against it for poisoning pets with their medications for fleas and ticks. Their doseages are too strong and have killed pets so often the FDA is requiring them to remove their products from stores by 2008.

The stores also stock outdated medicines from Hartz, which go bad and will poison pets as well.

Get your flea meds from the vet or a pet supplies store. Advantage and Revolution are excellent and you can get single doses for $10 from the vet, whereas the stores sell them in 4 packs. WATCH the expiration dates!!! Some places don't pull their old stock. And get the dose for the right weight of your cat. Check that the age limit is ok too--some can't be given to kittens under a certain age.

I'm a veterinary nurse and my Doctor always tells our patients to make sure when you do decide to give your animal (whether it's a dog or a cat) an at home flea treatment DO NOT used store bought products from local pet stores or markets ( e.g HARTZ ) because they are poisonous to your animals and could cause serious health problems. And FLEA COLLARS are NOT EFFECTIVE ...Take your cat to the vet and they could give them a pill called "capstar" that will kills all the fleas in a matter of a day, and then continue with a monthly dose of Advantage/Frontline, this is the only true effective way of keeping your cat Flea-free along with other potential harmful pests such as flea transfer of tapeworms to your cats, ticks, ear mites.

hope this helps!

I don't think so. I've heard very bad things about Hartz. My cat had an awful case of fleas a few years ago and after one dose of Advantage, she was totally flea-free! I would stick with that or whatever your vet recommends.

NO!!!!!
Many over the counter flea products can cause severe problems in many cats. I have had lots of experience with owners using OTC products on their cats with disastrous results. Hartz in particular seems to be the biggest culprit.
Use something safer, like Frontline or Advantage, both are available at many pet stores or on the internet (no prescription needed).
Vets sell Frontline and Advantage because they trust their safety, not because they want to sell you something that costs more.

I haven't had experience with this product, but I did get Advantage from the vet's office for flea treatment for my kitten. It's really not that expensive - mine was $14 for three treatments (one per month) for the kitten type, and they told me it would be $14 for one single dose when she got older. Most vets will just sell you the product without requiring an office visit, so you can save $ there if that is your concern.

Don't waste your money on Hartz or any other cheap brands. I have tried so many and Frontline works the best.

I hate to break it to you, but unfortunately they are not as strong as the ones you buy at the vet. I used to work for a vet.

The Hartz version may work partially or only last a few days.

Hope this helps.

I used to work for Hartz Mountain, their stuff sucks, don't buy it and it has nothing to do with cost either.

no... and I tried the hartz silver on my cat and it caused a chemical burn on her neck where the stuff was put on her. I don't have any trouble with the stuff the vet has.
