There are no beaches in Manhattan. The closest beach to Battery Park would probably be Water Taxi Beach, an artificial beach in Long Island City, Queens. There's no swimming there however.

If you want real beaches in NYC, go to Coney Island, Brighton Beach, or Manhattan Beach at the southern tip of Brooklyn. There's also Orchard Beach up in the Bronx and the Rockaways (Rockaway Point, Rockaway Park, Far Rockaway) further out in Queens.

EDIT: Learned something new today. There are also beaches on Staten Island - Midland Beach and South Beach, in the area around Great Kills Park. Accessible from Battery Park in Manhattan via Staten Island Ferry, then Staten Island Railway to Great Kills station, then east/south-bound S54 bus.

No beach in Manhattan. The closest beach is in Brooklyn - Coney Island, Brighton Beach, and Manhattan Beach. For that take the D train. On the west side, however, you have open space to walk along the Hudson River.
