The former requires less active thought, which generally seems easier to most people.

The latter includes interpretation and, some improvisation, and a hands-on education.

In short, this is the difference between theory and practice: in theory, they should be the same, but, in practice, they are not.

They amount to the ame thing don't they? Although I think I see what you're driving at, so please correct me if I'm wrong.

Basing your life on a book means you will read a book, and you will do what that book says, regardless of your thoughts.

Allowing the wisdom of a book to guide allows you to use your own thoughts and use it's guiding hand to help you make the right decisions.

For instance, and lets use the bible as a reference point, you and your boyfriend are living together an having sex but not married. The bible says it's a sin - case closed end of discussion.
However, in the second instance, you know that living together and having sex is a sin, but the only reason you're not married is because you're too damn broke trying to pay the mortgage to be able to get married in the first place.

Technically, I'm pretty sure that with reasoned argument, come judgement day, God will agree that you didn't actually do anything wrong, just maybe not in the right order. But if he's that ticked off, he shouldn't have given people the ability to learn by their mistakes should he? It's his own fault.

Now thats assuming a religious stance (as you've posted in the R&S section) but I assume it's roughly what you're getting at.

It's all how you look at it. If you base your life on a book to the exclusion of other books, other's insight, and your own good sense, you seem quite closed minded and shallow. If you appreciate and let the wisdom in a book guide your life, the implication is that that book, while a guide, is not the end all of your being.

Basing your life on a book is like letting that book be a pattern for your life. whatever the books says you should do, that you do. there can be no distinction whether its for bad or good. But letting the wisdom in a book guide your life is extracting the best practices and the lessons that can be learned from it to serve as a guide for your daily actions.

There is no difference, because you'll have to determine yourself if something is wisdom or crap. And it depends on what the book tells you. I know some books that people use to base their life on, that are so full of ancient misconceptions, that they've turned into lies in these days. It's not wise to base your life on these.
If you want to base your life on a book, you must make sure you know the book well, but also the criticisms on the contents, otherwise you'll never be able to make the decision if something is wisdom or bogus.

1. Basing your life on a book - would be basing your life by following every detail in the book .. without forming your own opinions .. or learning anything from any other sources

2. letting the widsom in a book guide you.. is finding wisdom not only in this one book.. but from many other books.. and/or people. adding to the other wisdoms you have .. its *guiding* you like you said.. not taking over your life ... like in #1

Dear Daughter

Allah bestowed on Us the following through Holy Book Quran:

2:151 Even as We have sent unto you an apostle from among yourselves to convey unto you Our messages, and to cause you to grow in purity, and to impart unto you revelation and wisdom, and to teach you that which you knew not:

Today We Muslims Just take Holy Quran Holy Book, revelation, but not the Wisdom accompanied with it.

All our problems faced by us is Because of this reason.

The first is dangerous and somewhat crazy depending on what that book is and if you take it literally or not. The second falls under 'take what you like and leave the rest' which I think is a pretty good way to live.

I think it's the difference between following words in a book or following the one who wrote the book.

The wisdom I have found from a multitude of sources affects my way of living...not just one source.
