My mother-in-law bakes bread. For many years she has done this for special occasions. We've never discovered a way of breaking it although we've tried many ways, stopping short of a nuclear weapon. But those loaves have played their part in the creation of a number of rockeries.

Acts 20:7And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.
sounds like breaking bread is more like our word for breakfast. just an expression they used for a meal. (i'm sure it also has a bit to do with the physical act of sharing a loaf of bread as well...)
but then what is bread in the Bible? Christ is the bread of life right? ...there is an inward application.

"Breaking bread" come from the beginning of a meal, a loaf of bread would be served, it would be passed around and each person would rip a segment of the bread off with their hands.
How do you break it? you take a whole loaf and rip out a segment then hand it to the next person, you literally break the bread in to individual pieces.

You simply tear it apart into smaller peices. Keep in mind that the old timers did not have sliced bread but mostly had flat bread like Pita.

I think this phrase comes from the act of taking a large loaf of bread and then breaking it in half or quarters to share it with others. Allah (God) knows best!

A good question and one that is very important. If you don't break it correctly, it will splinter all over the place. You have to be very careful not to break it against the grain.
and don't tell me bread doesn't have grain.

unless it is very solid bread technically you cannot "break" it, you can either cut it or rip it.
