He chewed up and ingested what I think is the lid to one of those Gladware-type containers... he's spent the last two or three days vomiting up small piles of it here and there, and today he's having trouble with his stool. I let him into the backyard for his morning break but I didn't watch him, so I'm not sure if he was able to eliminate but his backside is all covered in thin, dark muck and I've seen a few drops of blood. I palpated his belly and didn't feel anything too crazy, and he didn't seem to mind, but then he's usually pretty stoic. He's still retching up a clear, yellowish liquid and foam.
This is our first experience with this so I'm not sure if he needs to see the vet or if I should try home-remedy treatments first? (If so, what? And if this doesn't resolve within a day or so, he's going to the vet anyway.)
He's a neutered four-year-old Golden Retriever.
Thanks!

I wanted to follow up with everyone - reading these responses, I decided the risk wasn't worth waiting it out. I called the vet and they suggested I bring him in, so I did. Blood panel showed no organ failures or toxicity, but x-rays followed by a barium progression showed a rather large mass of plastic accumulated in his stomach. He's scheduled for surgery to remove it tomorrow.
Thank you all for encouraging me to call my vet - I would never have left it untreated but I do overreact about my dog's health sometimes so I just need assurance that I'm being responsible and not just obnoxiously paranoid. :)

Just call the vet's office and ask what to do, and explain to them what you just posted on here.
Good luck!!

Definitely see the vet. When dogs ingest foreign objects the stress on the body can cause liver and kidney damage because it cannot be broken down properly. Vomitting and constipation is not uncommon. Blood in stool can even mean a ripped colon, rectum, etc. It is very dangerous when dogs swallow stuff, and it can lead to death, especially if you are seeing all those signs! Take him in. The sooner you do, the less money you'll be spending, and the less sick your dog will be!

If your dog keeps puking, foaming and has been constipated for quite some time, then you must go to a vet. Your dog probably doesn't feel good. Not bringing it to a vet is going going to make your dog start to look sick, if it keeps puking for any reason, you must bring it to a vet!

You really should take him to a vet for this - especially since he has blood in his stool. The plastic bits probably scraped his innards and no doubt it hurts to pass anything.
The vet can recommend an enema or a laxative to help "bring out the best in him."

He may have a bowel obstruction. It's advise able to see a vet, especially if he is starting to bleed. You have to keep a sharp eye on labs because they will chew anything and get into anything when they are bored. Even when you have other dogs for him to Buddie with.

UGH... those darn goldens ( i have two) i would suggest you take him out or at least watch him,,, when he is outside to see if he poops,, also,, go outside and look for his poop,,, i do believe , especially since you saw blood) that a vet trip is mandatory,, TODAY ,,, if possible bring a stool sample too. he could have injured his intestines.... this could prove to be a very serious thing....
