Nope, you re not the only one, and since you took some time and effort to right your question, ill do the same for my answer. Your first part was correct in a sense that everyone does indeed desire this 'father' figure, who looks after them, loves them and will always be there for them. It is an emotional need that a lot of people seek out, and do find it in god. However, god was not created by some guy who was just lonely. There were hundreds of gods before this one (I am going to assume your talking about the christian god) who were created by man, but not because they were lonely, but because that was the best way they could describe the world in which they lived. E.g. The Egyptian god Rha, of the sun, explaining why the sun would rise etc. That is the only thing you can credit religion with (christianity for instance, was our first real attempt to explain how everything in the world works (granted we got it horribly wrong)). And as the idea spread (surprisingly in the most uneducated part of the middle east) people believed it and excepted it. (Due to lack of education and simple ignorance). Someone commented above saying, basically if god was dis proven a billion times why do people keep coming back. Well, simple really, if people can't explain something or have no one to turn to, they seek out this imaginary figure who 'helps' them. Religion and god is a placebo effect. Also, its due to general ignorance, lack of education, not knowing about our world/universe, being forced to believe in a certain religion since your a child without you having your own say in it etc. And if I may add, fear of the supernatural, which a lot of people have ( as fear is a key thing on which religion feeds, peoples fears of the dark, ghosts and of course death). Lastly, on your finishing point, we can prove that god doesn't exist. All the man made gods now, in the past or future, are all fake. Again, Man Made! The idea of some just dies out, yet sticks for a bit longer with others. If you believe in god, which one? Why not Zeus? God is given human characteristics and human emotions etc. And to those who say, i know what god wants/says/said etc. how? how do you know this and I don't? Where are you getting this information from? So, in short, if there is a being, this great designer who created it all and kick started our universe, it is not the man made god/gods which we have created throughout the centuries and beyond, it is something completely different that we know nothing about. Ty for reading this if you didn't get bored :) And I ll leave you with these famous words: "And do you think that onto such as you, a maggot minded, starved fanatic crew, god gave a secret and denied it me? Well, well what matters it, believe that too!

That's sort of like saying the painting invented the artist.
If I create something, I am interested in it, in how it works, if it looks and does what I designed it to do.
Our children don't understand why we do the things we do as parents, and both we and they are human. How can we, as flawed, limited human beings, possibly understand the actions and/or motives of a perfect, limitless God?
Perhaps you have the question backwards. The Bible says God created us in His image, not the other way around. Maybe we should be asking how come we, as creatures created in the image of God, don't exhibit more Godlike traits in our lives, such as mercy, compassion, love, etc....

i wonder that also. but then you do have things like the trinity that attempt to describe the nature of god (rather than just saying what god isn't), but there seems to be a different problem with that - it's an illusion of description, since it's actually a human attempt to patch together various contradictions.

Because God created man. In His image, in His likeness.

Why do you ask me this question ? I very strongly believe that "god" is a human brainstorm. God did not make people in his image - - people made god in their image.

Good question, good points. But. We were created in his image. He created earth and animals and whatnot first, THEN created something like himself coz it was a little boring maybe not to have something more connected to him. Who knows why?
I think what we know of God isn't all in the scriptures. The scriptures were written and interpreted by men. "Inspired by God" is a literal idea and it should be stamped on all bibles, the same as "Inspired by" is written on other books inspired by someone else....

I don't believe in man's interpretation of god, I believe god's like gravity, it can't think or love, it does.
