The Jews were led by Moses through the desert for 40 years. However- they were guided by God- it is recorded in the Torah (Five books of Moses) that they were led by a pillar of smoke by day, and a pillar of fire by night- when the smoke/fire stopped- they stopped and set-up camp, sometimes for a few days at a time, sometimes for months. Basically, Moses was just following the path and timetable set by God.

Edit: There seems to be sme confusion over why the Jews went through the desert for 40 years. It was NOT the sin of the golden calf- it was the actions of the spies that went into the land. They came back, and except for Caleb and Joshua, they gave negative reports- and the people chose to believe the 10 negative reports, instead of trusting in God to help them. As such- they were deemed not worthy to be the generation to enter Israel- and the punishment was that they would remain in the desert until that generation (in other words the people over the age of 20) had died, and only the next generation would enter the land. Joshua and Caleb were not punished and both entered Israel. Why 40 years? Moses was also destined to not enter the land due to his later sin after Miram died, and he sinned at the "bitter waters". But he was also righteous and his life would not be cut short- thus he was destined to live out the 120 years granted to the truly righteous. SInce he was 80 at the time- the nation remained in the desert for another 40 years- until the generation of the spies had died and Moses had reached the end of his lifespan.

I think you are asking how many years did Moses guide the Yahudim (Israelites) in the desert... If so, the answer is 40 years (almost). The Messiah was tested in the desert for 40 days, Moses lived as an Egyptian prince for 40 years, as a goat herd for 40 years, as a Yahudim-herd for 40 years. Moses was on mount Horeb for 40 days receiving the 10 commandments, and it was 40 years from the cruxifiction of Yahushua to the destruction of the temple.
I hope this was the x factor you where looking for.
Yahushua Shalom

The actual distance involved was not far, but the people had lived as slaves in Egypt for 400 years and had no idea how to live as a free people. God guided them for 40 years while the younger ones learned about freedom and leadership. It was the younger ones who actually entered the Promised Land -- only two of the original group survived -- Joshua and ??? Can't remember the 2nd one.

The Yids(chasidic term for jews) were "taken" through the desert for forty years.. I've read that it was because the new freed slaves didn't have the proper spirituality for Ha'Shem(G-d)..

Probably the whole "golden calf" thing...
