The general level of spelling, punctuation and grammer in this country today is appalling. Popular culture is not an excuse, it is down to nothing other than sheer laziness on the part of the writer and I personally find it insulting and disrespectful when someone has the temerity to write to me without following the rules of the language that they are communicating in.

The root of the problem is inadequete teaching of children at school that is compounded by a general indiferrence by thsoe who should know better and are in a position of influence.

Something reassuring, or definitely frightening is that the same questions are asked on Yahoo answers - France about how can people misspell french that much...
It seems to be a problem of time, not of language or country...

Well spotted.'Lose' and 'loose' are often used wrongly here too. English first language people don't seem to have much pride in their language. My first language is Welsh but I'm sure I make fewer errors in English than lots of these people who have it as their mother tongue .

I too sometimes mess up when writing the number two when preparing messages to people. I think there is just no way they're going to write back if in their minds they think I am stupid.

Well, its hard for some people to grasp. Especially people who don't speak English as a first language. Its a simple error. It isn't the worst mistake you can make.

You sound like my ex-boyfriend! He was always banging on about it - he worked in military (figures!) and actually sent a memo around his unit telling them off for bad Emails with mistakes in.

Thank god I gave him the heave-ho - what an anorak!!!!

Think your point is true though

Our language has some funny quirks. I never have understood that if:
see, saw, seen - is correct then why not
be, baw, been.

Just a thought.

I know people of all ages who mix these up. My boss is terrible for it, and he's in his forties.

My dad can't spell for toffee either. I'm so glad I got my mum's skill with English!

It's just how it is.
