Well, it does show most of the characters as having some form of religious belief, though for the most part they don't seem to be very good adherents.

I'd say it was more true to life, and neither pro or anti religion in any major way.

It's an equal opportunity satire :-)

I don't see how you could be biased against simpsons for being too religious.

I remember one episode where someones like "oh heck why not, you only live once!" and Apu pipes up with "Speak for yourself!"

I can't think of much of any of the big religions that aren't made fun of at least mildly in some way, and represented to some degree:
Flanders: fundamentalist christians.
Lovejoy: jaded/apathetic protestants?
Apu: Hindu
Lisa: Buddhist
Crusty and his father: Jewish
I don't remember if there was actually any muslim regular characters... come to think of it. but when simpsons was popular it wouldn't have been as big of an issue to not include them.

and I think most of the characters with a speficied religious standing had it made fun of to some degree at some point.

some people are weird.

I think it's funny. I've never seen it overtly push towards any certain religion - Lisa's a Buddhist, most of the town is some form of Christian - but even Flanders and Reverend Lovejoy are shown to have faults, blah blah blah.

It's a comedy, it's funny. What's really funny though is the marketing ploy that happened recently in england that got some pagans all bothered.

i'm an atheist but i will watch any supernatural stuff that's presented as fiction, i quite enjoy it. the type of atheists you describe sound strangely *superstitious*. the simpsons makes fun of just about everyone - religion is neither exempt nor put in focus all time i think. you've got lovejoy and flanders... is comic book guy an atheist, i don't remember?

ROTFL
I'm a non-believer and I have always enjoyed The Simpsons. Yeah even if that is the tone of the show, I still watch it for the humor.

the Simpsons is satire. As such, they often make subtle fun of religion (see rev. Lovejoy, Ned Flanders). The evolution vs. creationism episode was hilarious.

They're more anti-religious than pro-religion. That's why they make all their religious characters sound stupid.

Yes it is. Although it does poke fun at the fundies too.

I still watch it some. Its been on way too long and its getting old.
