You are so lucky to live in a place with good and cheap public transport. I was in Portland a while ago and was really impressed by how easy it is to get around.
I grew up in th U.K in the countryside. Though we live only an hour and a half from London, we only got one bus a week that went the wrong way. So it was a 4 mile cycle ride to the nearest bus stop, for a sevice that stopped early evening. Huge crimp on social life that led to a lot of sneaking around and lying to my parents.
Governments have been running down our public transport for decades and are now penalising us for using cars when they left us with no choice. Grrrrrr
