I am Roman Catholic and considering a tattoo. I have heard many different opinions but I haven't been able to find the Church's OFFICIAL position on this....Does anyone know?
Thanks!

They don't have one, unless the tattoo depicts something that is anti-Catholic.

I don't think they have an official position; they used to in the middle ages but I doubt it is still on the books. They used to condemn it because it was all tribal markings, never for recreation, and the tribal markings were deemed sinful because 1. they signified alleigience to the tribe and native religion, not the catholic church and 2. they were very primitive tattoos, which were pretty much torture to get.

Now I think it is up to the individual. Some priests don't like them because they think it is a waste of money that could be better spent on the poor, or vain, or disrespectful to the body. Some don't care, because they figure it is just a tattoo and it has nothing to do with religion. Some like the idea because if it is a religious tattoo then it would remind you that god is always with you and so on.

I can find no Catholic teaching against tattoos.

However a point to ponder:

You are a masterpiece work of art, created in the image and likeness of the artist, God.

Would you go up to Leonardo Da Vinci's painting "The Last Supper" and try to "improve" it by adding your own touches here and there?

With love in Christ.

as far as i know there is not one...i have always been told (grew up catholic) that you are not to adorn your body with tattoos but i think it is more a preference of people not of the church...i have know 3 priests with tattoos so i don't think they are going to send you to hell for them

Your question is funny. Why should the church have an official position on tattoos? Of course it doesn't.

good grief, who cares. isn't it bad enough that religionists have an opinion on the appropriateness or lack thereof of every tiny detail of a person's life, even worse that some people actually expect this state of affairs and encourage it. is tapdancing in winter a sin? will using acne cream endanger my immortal soul? cripes... ok, i think i'm better now.

Actually, what business is it of anyone else about our choice for personal decoration. The only position that is important is yours.

It is against the bible to mark your body, or mutilate the body. This means no tatto or body piercings.
