European Insurance for Americans driving a British Reg car?

I would like to lend (even sell) my car to American friends who need a vehicle for touring in Europe for 6 - 12 months. What insurance is needed for/by them. ALSO, if they buy the car, where does it have to be licenced/registered/MOT'd? They are US residents.

They're subject to all of the rules that you are. There is no difference except for their driving license. Their US license is valid for one year from entry into the UK. After that they need to get a UK license -- or just hop over to the Continent on a day return journey to get their passport stamped as that re-sets the one year clock.
