Baptism of one old enough to first believe and repent (Mark 16:16, Acts 2:38) washes away that person's sins (Acts 22:16) by bringing him into contact with Christ's death (Romans 6:3-4, Col. 2:12) where the saving blood was shed (Romans 5:8-10).

It is the blood that washes away sin (Revelation 1:5). You cannot wash in the blood if you do not contact it. Since the blood was shed at His death, you must contact His death to contact and be washed with His blood.

If by "original sin" you imply that a baby is born guilty of sin passed down through his ancestors, I wish to tell you this concept is not taught in the Bible!

Notice these verses:

"The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him." (Ezekiel 18:20)

"For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad." (2 Corinthians 5:10)

Baptism actually takes away any sin we may have committed up to that point. That is why in the earliest days of the Church, many people were not baptised until they were about to die. Constantine is probably the most famous example of this.

Jesus Christ dying on the Cross is actually what helped wipe out the burden of original sin from mankind. We are still born with it, and baptism doesn't, in itself, take it away, but Christ's shedding of His Blood removes the block that was put upon mankind because of original sin. Before Christ's sacrifice, many good souls were not allowed into heaven because of this. Some have asked "Where did Christ go after He died, but before He was resurrected?" He went to the realm of the dead, visiting those souls who up to then were not allowed into heaven because of original sin, letting them know that the block to them entering heaven had finally been removed.

baptism, dipping underwater, is a symbol of Christ dying on the cross and then being resurrected back to life. when Christ died on the cross, he instituted a new way of living, he abolished Moses' law and now we're supposed to follow the new law which states that we have to hear, believe, repent, be bapitzed, and live a faithful life if we want to go to heaven. also when Christ died on the cross, He died for all of the sins that people have created and the new ones that people had not created yet so in order to have your sins washed away, you have to be baptized, as according to the Bible.

I hope this answered your question.

Baptism is an act of obedience only, a symbolic act of what has already happened in your heart by trusting in (faith) the saving grace of Jesus dieing on the cross once and for all sin and all sinners. When one gives their life to Christ they are dieing to their old self and becoming a new creation in Christ, baptism is a picture of this only. Baptism doesn't wash away any sins at all. If anyone says to you have to be baptized to be saved or to wash away sin is quite frankly wrong. We are saved by faith not by works lest anyone shall boast Ephesians 2: 8-9. Baptism as you speak of would fall under the title of a work.
