I am also wanting to go to school during my service. If I had to serve actively for a couple months, that'd be fine, but I fully intend on staying mainly focused on school. I'm attending law school next year and don't want to delay going to and finishing law school to do this. Does anyone know a solution? Service in the Reserves for a 2 year term would be ideal, if possible.
Additionally, do you think joining now would get me sent to Iraq?

Update to question: the reason I'm asking about a 2 year commitment is because law school is so demanding. Most schools now won't let you work the first year of law school, period. They just won't admit you if you have other commitments. This is why I'm looking for a short-term commitment. Obviously I'm not going to opt for an enlistment salary when I hold a college degree, as well as a doctorate in law... I don't think any of you would either.
I'm not concerned about the money, I would just love to have served and to have had the experience. Iraq is not a problem, but the 15 months is, since that just cannot work with my education plan.
Thanks for all your responses.

You best option would be to discuss the idea of attending college with the military paying,. You would then be bound to serve a certain amount of time (at least five years active duty, with a reserve component after that) but it would allow you to finish school, begin your military training during the summers and then become active duty. You will have to serve the time if you go this route. if you don't comply you will have to pay back all the tuition and training costs. The upside is, you would be inducted into the service as an officer and would, most likely, be placed in the legal services division of whatever branch you join. Contact a recruiter to see what the options may be. Unfortunately, if you join any other way right now, there is no garuntee that you will not be activated to full duty and sent someplace...either to Iraq or to a base in the states to act as supplementary personal,.for the better part of a year.

Do not join the Army if you are not 100% sure you can handel 15 months in the hot sun getting attacked radomly. You will be sent o Iraq...it's not a matter of If it's when. Why do you think the Enlistment bonus keeps going up in value, why do you think the army extended the tours of duty for 15 months.
If it's not Iraq it's Afganistan....yeah sounds great huh. Im Already In Iraq right now. Let me say, this has had the worst affect on peoples lives you could possibly imagine. 85% of our unit is either now devorced or getting devorced. All of those taking classes prior to Deployment had to drop out because our work day here is 14 hours 7 days working and 1 day off...maybe..if were lucky..and not everybody can be by a computer...I just luck out once in a while.
It's like Prison...It's Like you Gaurding your own prison. All these things may not happen to you but I am 100% sure you will go to Iraq of Afganistan if you enlist...Don't ruin your life stay a civillian.

Well the guy that said he was a recruiter is kind of WAY OFF BASE.
Just talk to a real recruiter, just like with doctors, the Army has programs to recruit lawyers. Remember the show JAG? In some cases they pay for all or most of you law school but you promise to serve a certain amount of years. You get a decent pay, you're an Officer, you get experience in yout field before you go "job searching" and experience is everything.
Did you think the Army or the military has its own medical school and dental school? Think about it.

For a very short time after September 11th the Air Force was recruiting for 2 years. It didn't last very long. Now the minimum is 4 years like it had been. I'm not sure what the other branches are offering.

i am in the army right now in my third tour in iraq if you do active you are able to go to college while you are in most post have a education center and have online courses or they will send you to the closest college it is free while you are in aslong as you pass your courses. Now if you go national guard or reserve they will pay for part of your school but where ever you go most likely you will go to iraq. It is good to go to the army it is a great steping stone for your future the least you can do is 3 years some jobs 2 dont listen to the people that never been in or that were in and were kick out for something stupid most are cowards and are to afraid to go to war and it is not as bad here as they make it in the news.

all commitments are for EIGHT years, including Reserves. as a Reservist, you can and will be called up to active duty, and it won't matter if you are in college. and not necessarily to Iraq, there are numerous places our servicemembers have been deployed to.

It doesn't sound like your heart is in this. I could be wrong, I'd love to be wrong... but I'm not feeling it.
As for being deployed to Iraq.... Probably, but why bother asking? You're sent where you're needed.
Talk to a Recruiter.
