i have been doing some readin and i want to better understand my religion (christianity). and so i have a question... is jesus related to david through a bloodline? it appears that they are not blood related b/c joseph is related to david. but then i "heard" that mary was also related to david but i couldnt find any biblical proof. and one more thing... where in the bible does it specifically state that the messiah will be a decendent of david. b/c i was looking in the book of isaiah and isaiah prophesizes (sorry not really a word) about how "He will reign on David's throne and his kingdom" but it doesnt say anything about be a decendent of david.... or did i just miss it?

so basically.....

does jesus have a blood relationship with david whether it be through mary or joseph? please give some biblical proof.

and where in the bible does it say that the messiah decend from david?

thanks for the help. just trying to better understand.

Both Joseph and Mary are descendents of David. Joseph is a descend of David thru his son Solomon. Mary is a descendent of David thru his son Nathan.

The opening words Matthew give an abbreviated geneology of Jesus.

Matthew 1:1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

The genealogy thru Mary is found in Luke 3:23-38.
____________

The virgin birth of the Messiah was necessary because of the curse of Coniah which the Lord pronounced. Coniah was a descendent of David thru Solomon's line as was Joseph. God pronounced a curse on Coniah that no man of his descendents would prosper sitting on the throne of David. So if Jesus was the physical descendent of Joseph then He could not prosper sitting on the throne of David. But since the Messiah was to be a descendent of David it was necessary for Mary to have a virgin birth of the Messiah.
_______

The Biblical reference for the curse is found in Jeremiah.

24"As I live," declares the LORD, "even though Coniah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah were a signet ring on My right hand, yet I would pull you off;

25and I will give you over into the hand of those who are seeking your life, yes, into the hand of those whom you dread, even into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and into the hand of the Chaldeans.

Jeremiah 22:26 "I will hurl you and your mother who bore you into another country where you were not born, and there you will die.
27 "But as for the land to which they desire to return, they will not return to it.
28 "Is this man Coniah a despised, shattered jar?
Or is he an undesirable vessel?
Why have he and his descendants been hurled out
And cast into a land that they had not known?
29 "O land, land, land,
Hear the word of the LORD!
30 "Thus says the LORD,
'Write this man down childless,
A man who will not prosper in his days;
For no man of his descendants will prosper
Sitting on the throne of David
Or ruling again in Judah.'"

Both Mary and Joseph were related to David Joseph as legal guardian and Mary through the birth of Jesus. Joseph goes all the way back to Solomon but the promise was carried to mary through Davids Son Nathan. LUke 3 Many cultures did not keep the genealogies but Israel did. They were destroyed however in 70Ad when the temple was burned down so now very few can identify which tribe they were from.

Where in the Bible does it say that the messiah descend from David?

Isa 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isa 9:7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to establish it, and to uphold it with judgment and with righteousness from henceforth even for ever.

It states as has previously been shown in answers above Matthew 1 that Joseph was of the House of David.
Is this the scripture you're looking for in Isaiah?
How can he reign on David's throne WITHOUT being a descendant of David? Isn't that the definition of Monarchy? And did not David call him Lord? In Psalms? And did not Jesus ask this question himself of the Pharisees?

I hope this answers your question. Although Iam not sure what this has to do with anything however Iam here to serve.
Mary - of the tribe of Judah, and the lineage of david (psalm 132:11 , Luke 1:32 she was connected by marraige with Elisabeth who was of the lineage of Aaron (Luke 1:36).
Now we know that Judah's father was Jacob who married Racheal and Leah (Gen. 29:35). We know that Jacob was son of Isaac (Gen 25:26). We know that Isaac's father was Abraham (Gen 21:3). We know that Abraham had a promise from God (Gen 12:1);(Gen 13:14-18);(Gen 15:1);(Gen 16); (Gen. 17:4-5) Abram chosen ancestor of the great deliver whose coming had been long ago predicted Gen. 3:15.
David was king of Judah. We know that Saul was king and then the Lord appointed david as king.
Joseph - son of Jacob. Once again we go back to the lineage and the promise of Abraham- (Gen 17:5-9)
From my understanding they say that Joseph was the stepfather because he didnot have sexual intercouse. You can not be a Father of something you did not produce, but you can be a step-father by marriage.Understand this was done for the glory of the Lord. Mary was pregnant by the spirit of God we all know that this was for his glory. 1King 1:37, 1King 2:45, Luke 1:32

The gospel of Matthew is a personal and earliest account of THE LORD JESUS CHRIST. Some gnostics writings which are not witness account are merely theorizing their positions and that is what the mega-christian churches do not approve with as they are merely intellecualizing the events maybe for commercial purposes and thus, sensationalizing their story. I agree with the gospel of Matthew than any other books written later in history particularly the modern writers with numerous hidden agenda on their side.

there are two bloodlines listed in the NT, these are *not* identical, and one explanation for this is that one is for joseph and one is for mary.

but the trick of it is, that the descendancy needed, is only passed through the father,... ... the biological father... so by most christian belief... jesus is a bastard child (one without a biological father married to the childs mother) and thus does not qualify.

as you said, the messiah must qualify to reign on david's throne. ... this MEANS that he must be a direct patrilineal descendant of David.

the messiah of Judaism (the messiah described in the OT) must have a biological father.
is not a sacrifice.
and is no more divine than you or I.

the RELIGIOUS heritage is passed though the MOTHER. the ROYAL line is passed through the FATHER.

edit for below: your church lied to you. its definitionally impossible to have been adopted into the kingly line. if Joseph was not jesus's biological father he *absolutely* was not the one.

which he wasn't anyway, but thats just one more strike against him.

Jesus is a descendant of David genetically through Mary though Mary is not descended through the line of Kings that came after David. Joseph is also a descendant of David through Solomon but Joseph is not genetically related to Jesus. Jesus is an adopted son through the Kingly line descended from King David.

From my understanding of it - tough I cannot give you quotes - Jesus is related to david through Mary's bloodline, and only related to Joseph by familial ties - Joseph being his stepfather.

I found you this - wilth all kinds of quotes in it, but I don't see that it will clear anything up much.

You are right, read on until Matthew 3 verses 7-12, to understand why natural succession was not to be. As Jesus says often, its for Gods glory, not mans. Very good insight.

Yes, brb for verses.

Matthew Chapter 1
1 The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

2 Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judas and his brethren;

3 And Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar; and Phares begat Esrom; and Esrom begat Aram;

4 And Aram begat Aminadab; and Aminadab begat Naasson; and Naasson begat Salmon;

5 And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse;

6 And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias;

7 And Solomon begat Roboam; and Roboam begat Abia; and Abia begat Asa;

8 And Asa begat Josaphat; and Josaphat begat Joram; and Joram begat Ozias;

9 And Ozias begat Joatham; and Joatham begat Achaz; and Achaz begat Ezekias;

10 And Ezekias begat Manasses; and Manasses begat Amon; and Amon begat Josias;

11 And Josias begat Jechonias and his brethren, about the time they were carried away to Babylon:

12 And after they were brought to Babylon, Jechonias begat Salathiel; and Salathiel begat Zorobabel;

13 And Zorobabel begat Abiud; and Abiud begat Eliakim; and Eliakim begat Azor;

14 And Azor begat Sadoc; and Sadoc begat Achim; and Achim begat Eliud;

15 And Eliud begat Eleazar; and Eleazar begat Matthan; and Matthan begat Jacob;

16 And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.

18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.
