I'm enslisting in a bout a year, but I was curious as to how some of you out there with the experience became officers? did you start out as an e-1 or actually start out as an officer? When i do enlist I will become an e-3 after basic, but I want to go as far as possible with my career.

Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

there are many paths to commissioning.

One, go straight to OCS. You can do this if you are a Citizen, and already have a 4 year college degree; as well as meet all the other requirements: age, moral and physical. alternatively, apply to OCS after being in the Fleet a while.

Two: if you do not currently have a 4 year degree, but do have at least some college, enlist and then apply to STA-21. this program requires you top get a 4 year degree in three years, so the more credits you already have, the better your chances are of being picked up. Another alternative is BDCP, whereby you go to college full time on the Navy;s dime but are required to attend OCS afterwards( as opposed to being in ROTC)

Three: enlist and then move up the ranks, to LDO or Warrant Officer. LDOs must be E6 and Chief's Board eligible. Warrants must be at least an E7.

The Navy is looking for High tech majors like Engineering and Math, with at least a 3.5 GPA from a good school to be competitive. They also want well rounded Sailors: sports, vvolunteerism, leadership experience.

Keep in mind that the navy uses separate Recruiters for Officers and Enlisted, so if you already have your degree, talk to both kinds to see what you chances are of going straight to OCS.

Well first ill try to answer the questions 1. Not really, your only problem is that your major may not be something the navy deems appropriate. 2. Yes, you wont get into the program if the Navy wasn't set on making you an officer 3. Yes, usually you start with a 4 year contract Eventually you'll need to talk to a recruiter which im sure they would be glad to do, give one a call. If you have a friend in the Navy tell the recruiter they referred you when you sign up then ther get a few thousand dollars!

You need a college degree. If don't have one you can go to college and join the r.o.t.c, recruit officers training corps. They will pay for a lot of your schooling. Most schools have them now. Or you could apply to Annapolis, that's the naval academy. But don't hold your breath on that one.

Apply for NROTC while in DEP. If you get picked up for it cool, you will start off as an officer. IF not, apply for STA-21 EVERY YEAR you can. While applying for STA-21, work on your degree using TA, Pace, and every opportunity you have. If you dont get picked up on STA-21 before you get your BA, apply for OCS when you recieve your bachelors.
