the pilot will say in the intercom when it is okay to turn on your laptop, but no wireless device because it occasionally can interfere with their radar and signals. So fo example, if you were Yahoo Voice chatting with your frined, the pilots would also hear it because when a terminaxz in a radio signal, bypasses another terminaz, it turns the frequency into a low carbon level, thus reducing the friction of the frequency and htrz, which will hence allow radio intereference(I'm a scientist in signals)

I am a pilot and travel with my laptop all of the time. When going through security, you will need to take it out of its case and put it in a bin. They usually will not make you turn it on. (If they don't say anything, don't ask) When on the plane, you will need to keep it off until the flight crew (usually a flight attendant) makes an announcement stating that it is ok to use approved portable devices. (You might want to place the laptop under the seat in front of you while boarding since the seatbelt sign will probably still be on at this point.) Then when on descent to your destination, they will make an announcement telling you to put your things away. Don't worry about the wireless device if it is built in, you won't have any signals up there so it won't hurt anything.

Have fun.

Laptops are fine on airplanes so long as you turn the wireless off - which shouldn't be a problem since there aren't any wi-fi signals that will be accessible anyway.

When you go through security, you have to take the laptop out of the bag and put it in one of those bins that they run through the x-ray machine.

Like it has been said you won't be able to use the wireless but you can use the laptop to play games, watch movies, do work. As far as checking in you have to put it in the bin by itself and turn it on and off maybe for them. Check the TSA website for exact info.
