Because so many of you took time to think and to answer, I owe you a few words.
Michele: Love for you is a FEELING and a need to protect the object of your love.
Lantagrace: to you love is your own well-being gained by another's happiness
Wisdom: love to you is non-judgmental acceptance of others
Smiles: (Tina Turner, BTW) you define love as utilitarian, what can it DO FOR YOU.
drgoodtunes: love is a FEELING, good, fleeting
Matt: FEELING, fantastic, indefinable
Smitticus: so many good things, but ultimately, obsession, ADDICTION
laid back chica: for you love is COMPLETE DEPENDENCE on another's happiness--beware!
Silly-me-Jess: Love is sweet, a fuzzy FEELING, and again COMPLETELY DEPENDENT on another person. I'm glad you added caring, supportive, understanding--those are things you can DO.
Pinksandbeach: Trust, you say, putting another before you, respecting that person, and sharing a life.

To continue:
Jela: To you, love is SACRIFICE.
Be careful of becoming a doormat, a martyr, then not love, but resentment will ensue.
Psy: Your "love" is entirely cerebral. I like that it certainly a positive energy that lacks negative energy, but that isn't real life; it's theory. Love includes, but transcends negativity.

I have carefully left out CYNICISM.
Why? It is NOT that it's not VALID. It is.
But it wasnt a different question. It begs this question. It addresses not what love "means," but how love "fails." Now what love is, but what it isn't. (not what it means, but what it does not mean....)

Perhaps, that will be a good question.
I'll think about that one.

Meantime, thanks to all of you for your effort, and I wish you all the best.

I asked this question in four categories. I am astounded at the different responses.
Do read a best answer to my question from philosophy (Shahrizat)
I know that I love, when I would put another's best interest and comfort before mine without the slightest hesitation...

I know that I love, when I would forgive another even before they thought of the words "I'm sorry..."

I know that I love, when I would feel another's pain as mine, and would gladly endure the agony if only I may siphon it into my being...

I know that I love, when I would put pride and selfish feelings in the backseat, whilst they would share an obstructed view out the windshield with me, along this journey called life...

And I know that I love when I would always visit upon them in my prayers, so that they would know peace and courage to endure this life without me, if I were to suddenly depart this world...

love is when you're not happy till you know the other person's happy. it's having the same affectionate feelings no matter what the person looks like or says or does. and love in a relationship is when the two people stick together and work out their problems instead of simply walking away. lol i don't think it's as confusing as some people think...gotta feel it to understand it i suppose...

Depends on the context. Saying you love an object or a thing, be it a flower, a dress or a song, indicates that you really like said thing or object. But love in terms of people is harder to define.

Love is when you can't stop thinking about someone. Love is when your heart flutters and you get butterflies when you see someone. Love is when you go out of your way to make your special person's day that little bit more special. Love is when you can live, cry, laugh and lie with the same person everyday for the rest of your life...and look forward to it.

Those are a few ways of describing love, but you know you love someone when you feel empty if they're not around.

The Love attitude has no negative or is consistently positive. The word as used in relation to a subject or kind of subject is not consistent in its comparison of its kind in other kinds of relations, so the meaning for the word 'love' is contingent on the relation described as each relation envolves different positives. e.g. favorite things, family, friends, animals, science,

Love is the undescribable feeling you have for some one.
It's impossible to define, but you know when you have it.
