My 2002 Dodge Durango has 88k miles... it has started to feel like its sluggish, or that there is some friction or resistance from the engine. The gears still shift, but it seems like they are holding on longer and reving higher before shifting.

As in a previous post... you may just be running low fluid.

A fairly nasty indicator is both the color and smell of the ATF [Fluid].

Blackened and Acrid/burned smelling fluid can signal heavy use or ultimate failure.

Come over to the "RealChevyVans" Yahoo Group and search for the word "Fluid"... We've had some rip roaring "Discussions" about Automatics... Service Intervals... The amazingly Heat Focused Nature of how ATF can fail in very short mileages etc.

ATF dies in proportion to the operating temperatures it is pushed to in heavy use or excessively hot weather running.

Try changing the filter an fluid. 88k is nothing unless you been hauling large heavy trailers.Have it done at a good place no low end parts & fluid.

I have had 2 cars with transmission problem your car wil will hesitate and stall and you will have a hard time putting ur car in gear. When you drive it will feel like your transmsion is going to fall out. It is a real pain in the rear end with transmissions...

you need to get it back flushed & filter changed. if your going down a level hi way & it drops down out of overdrive into high at 70 mph it means you've waited too long, and will be out a couple grand for a new transmission.
