If you are in a traffic jam and dont move anywhere for a while, park is fine. In my opinion, drive plus the brake is best for stop lights and short duration stops. Its just less work the trans has to do, not that shifting to park and back is a lot of work for it, but less strain is less strain.

It depends on the traffic jam. If it's start-and-stop, or moving at snail's pace, leave it in Drive (D). Even do this if it has been stopped for 2 minutes. After 3 minutes or so, you can put in Neutral (N) and let off the brake if you're on a flat or straightaway. On a hill, though, leave it in Drive (D). However, never put the car in Park (P) while on a road with traffic that you are not pulled over for. That is hazardous to other drivers and it doesn't do any good for your transaxle either.

On old cars when automatic transmissions were just developed, it would be better to put it in P (or N and use the brake) to let the engine run free without load. Modern transmissions don't need this. Just leave it in D and use the brake

Leave it in drive. That's what it's designed for. Too much shifting will wear it faster. Plus, it will take you longer to shift into drive while the guy behind you honks at you during a green light. Since you'll be so upset about that, you'll mash the gas as soon as the transmission engages, which will ruin it faster.

Unless you're waiting for a train or your girlfriend to come out of the bathroom at McDonalds, just use the brake and keep it in drive.

. I NEVER use Park except when I park the car. If you shift into Park when you're on the road, you have to go through the Reverse gear and you might accidetly leave it there and bump the car in back . I don't use 1st or 2nd gear either, unless I'm getting stuck in mud or snow. .
