I would love to stay in the millitary, I just can't afford to be sent away from my family any more. My service is nearing its end and I'm looking at joining the Coast Guard.

I am not absolutely certain of the "deals" that are being cut at the present time -- but -- a short time back -- the "deal" was -- when you crossed over from one service to another -- there was an immediate cut of one pay grade !!
So, unless this has changed -- you probably are looking at being jolted down to E-4 for awhile -- but -- PO3 is not all that big a deal if you are getting the bennies your after here !!!

I looked into the Coast Guard before my last enlistment was up and I was told that with a Wife and a baby I had too many dependents for the U.S.C.G.
I would say stay NAVY if you want to stay in the military. I did without a bonus, not 'cause I'm Joe Navy. I did it because of the job and the wonderful responsibility that comes with it.
I just changed platforms and it took a month to start to figure out what was going on and understand. I couldn't imagine what it would be like to change services.
Hey, Good Luck shipmate, either way!

Ask the PROFESSIONALS that question. It depends on the needs of the USCG. I wanted to go from USN to USCG back in 69 and from E-5 the best the USCG could offer me was E-3! GO POUND SAND and hung up on the recruiter. Stayed USN 20 years+.
You have a good background that can translate to a good civilian job. Try dealing for a set of orders. If they can't do it, walk.

well, for one, the CG deploys too, you know, there are cutters in the Gulf right now.

and have you asked whether the CG is taking Prior service?

The AF definitely is not, and it's possible that neither is the CG.

what about Going Reserves?
