Sun exposure and genetics. Only ones that look weird can be cancerous or w/e. See a dermatologist if you are concerned about them.

i always thought you were born with them... or got them when you were really young at least.

yes, they could be dangerous to your health, because they can become cancerous from too much sun exposure.
they have like a ABCD thing for you to check your moles.
Asymmetry
Border [you want an even border]
Color [it should all be 1 color]
Diameter [i believe anything over a pencil eraser is bad.]

if you've got a problem with any of the above, then you should go to a dermatologist.

if you have too many, it could be skin cancer, see a derm. moles can be from many reasons though, if you have many freckles and you've been in the sun, the sun could darken your freckles and they may seem like moles to you. even if you don't have freckles however, moles can still form as a result of staying in the sun for too long. if you've gotten shots or small wounds in a circular shape of a mole, it could be a scar from those. i've noticed that i have many moles from where previous shots have been, and they are black. sun exposure can make them bigger however. if you are unsure, see a doctor to make sure it isn't skin cancer
