im specifically asking do they stamp it or mark the date directly onto the passport?

It depends on how you travel and your status in your current country. If you're an American Citizen visiting Canada by air, then immigration stamps you in. However, if you're driving, then they don't do anything to your passport, other than scan it through the computer.

yes they will mark the date that you entered so that they can check if you have overstayed your visit --- they do that in every country
