Found solution: I needed something to kill (and give residual control of) weeds and grass along a fence line and in driveway cracks and other places that are hard to weed eat. After doing my best research, looking for something that's not too strong (I don't want to kill trees or desireable grass) but better than choices at Lowes and HD, I bought Pramitol 25E. I found that it is a VERY STRONG vegetation killer/soil sterilizer, but still not as strong as many choices. After researching these products I have learned that they are VERY POWERFUL and can (and do) do very much UNINTENDED HARM, so I will be VERY careful how I use it. I will be VERY CAREFUL WHERE I put it, make sure of NO RUNOFF, AND will also dilute it TWICE AS MUCH as what the directions call for. Hopefully readers who also need this product will also be VERY careful with them.
It looks like this was what I needed (again I will be VERY CAREFUL), and it was only $36 for a gallon of concentrate.

I worked on a research project about 6 years ago looking at a replacement for methyl bromide (since it is no longer on the market and very dangerous). One of the better methods we tested was solarization - using the sun's heat to kill weed seed and microbes in the soil. If the area is sunny, you can place a thick black or clear plastic (at least 4 mils) over it and anchor securely with landscape pins. Leave it on for at least a month in summer and you will get good control for up to a year. It will not prevent new weed seeds that blow or wash in after the plastic is removed from germinating. I found several links with how-tos for solarization including this one: http://cals.arizona.edu/yavapai/anr/hort/byg/archive/soilsolarization.html

RE:
What is the best / least expensive soil sterilant for 1-2 years control? Also, does it work on bare ground?

Princep is an older pre emergent that is often sold to control weeds in driveways for a year at a time.
It has low volatility so it doesn't simply boil off like most other treatments when the temperatures go up.
