I think they're great folks. I've had opportunity to meet many of them over the years, thanks to the museum work I've done, and I find them to be quite likeable folk.

I had one man stand and watch me make a broom from start to finish, because he'd been fascinated by it as a kid when his neighbor made brooms but he never got to watch one being made - just seen the machines. His whole family (he was the grandpa) was a very open and friendly group.

I spent several hours one spring speaking with another Old Order Amish man who was travelling across country to learn how to create typefaces by hand, so he could take that trade back east. His journey was fascinating, since he was walking most of the way to Utah from pensylvania- he'd started in March, I met him the end of May, and he needed to be there mid July. He expected to come back through in October. What fortitude and devotion - both to going to learn this new skill set and to sticking with his religious convictions and practices.

I've spoken with Amish farmers who explain how they farm "modernly" yet differently than we did at out 1900 farm.

I've giggled with Amish women over the undergarments Victorian women wore.

I've had Amish women show me how to do things an easier way - sewing, cooking, cleaning - how they've simplified age old things.

I've only ever met one group that wouldn't communicate with us at all, but they did the next year they came through. I think they just didn't know what to expect of us.

Overall, I've found them to be very welcoming, very down to earth people with a peaceful spirituality that seems to just be part of their everyday life.

Decent, hard working people. A bit peculiar. Romanticized and misunderstood by the general population. Their lives are not so simple. I live in northern Indiana. We have a lot of Amish here. I have been in traffic jams started by a buggy.

Although I am Christian,I admire the Amish way of forgiving. They are hard workers and for the most part are righteous people.

After our government succeeds in making us a population that has to depend on them for everything, the Amish will inherit this earth.

They deserve our respect and even admiration.
Their culture is so different from ours but many times I am envious to their way of life (free from the "rat race" and harmful influences we have in society today).

Check out my Amish photos I took last May while visiting PA:

i think they are very friendly people who have a good idea on how to live. And they make awesome food!!! My husband's grandparents use to be amish...they are now mennonite (and no they aren't the same...very different) i don't understand their beliefs at all but it's not my job to judge them at all...they are just like you and me....human.

I think they're cool. Amish Paradice is a funny song. I like how they're determined to stay away from worldly things and very family orienated.

For some reason I am just fascinated with them. There's a lot of communities around my grandmother's place (where I just got back from visiting,) so we spent some time visiting their stands. I am really intrigued by the way they live, and would love to try it. The only problem I would have is with their religious beliefs...
