In addition to activity toys and books, for his first birthday my son received a Radio Flyer wagon and a sand and water table.

He absolutely loves them both! He LOVES riding to the park in his wagon and he loves playing in the sand and water during sunny days. In cooler months, macaroni can be substituted for the sand or water for inside play time.

Her own cake to dig in. Seriously, my son got so many presents on his first birthday and all he really cared about was the cake. If you're having a big party, just get her something small, or take her somewhere fun. She's not going to be mad that you didn't get her some thing big, or anything at all. At one they're more into the paper, ribbons and boxes anyway. The cake is crucial, though.

Instead of a huge lot of toys (we have a very large extended family), we suggested savings bonds for college....our son is 4 years old and now has over $2,000 dollars face value from his last four birthday parties in savings bonds. It has been wonderful in many ways! Our son was the only grandchild for awhile and still receives many toys and gadgets, but the savings bonds have been the best gifts overall due to what is to come 14 years from now! A bachelors and masters degree cost me almost $80,000 in student loans and I'd like to spare my son that loan payment!! Just an idea....!!

My daughter started to become interested in shapes and puzzle pieces around then. So a toddler puzzle - the wooden pieces that are easy to put into place - would be nice. Or a ball with different shapes cut out of it that you place the pieces into (ie circles, triangles, etc). She also got a telephone that played songs, said numbers, and made animal sounds that she loved and still uses today (she's now 20mths). Around 13 or 14mths she started her doll phase, and started taking care of her dollies like they were her own babies. Feeding them, carrying them around, patting them to sleep, etc. She's only getting more and more into dolls! Oh, and how could I forget! A stroller the perfect size for her to push around. Before she got her own doll stroller she was always pushing her (the big) stroller around. We have the cutest pictures of her at 13mths pushing her 6mth old cousin around (with an adult right next to them of course).

a cool cake- her own personal one- that she can have at and smash into her face all she wants! One year olds dont really care about presents....they DO like food, though, and the pictures will be around forever!

She might like a little 'scooter' or sturdy doll stroller that she can push while practicing to walk. Or maybe board books if she likes to read? Seems like 1-year-olds like little balls (not small enough to choke on) that they can roll across the floor. Or one of those swirly chutes that you can roll a ball down. (You can get them at The Right Start I think).

what i would really do is start her a bank account. put a little bit in each birthday and she can take it all out when she turns 18..or maybe 16 when she wants to buy a car.

Dora dolls are pretty popular. Stick to either soft toys or ones that promote development with shapes and colors.

little bike that she can use her feet to move, sippy cups (silly, but always a big hit with my kids), clothes... heck really it doesn't matter she'll just have fun tearing away all the paper... really you can get away with giving her just about anything right now...
