I went swimming about a week ago. Had a tangle but didn't quite have the time to get it out. I went swimming again slept etc. Now in the back of my head there is a massive knot that I can not get out. It is woven as tight as a rope. I was told I have to get my hair cut to my neck. It currently is long to the middle of my back. Please can someone help me figure out how to loosen the knot.

1] get shower, conditioner, wide tooth comb, and chop sticks
2] wet hair, squeeze out extra water. Apply conditioner all through, rubbing GENTLY into all hair
3] get a friend!
4] start combing as much as you can, abd clip untangled hair out of the way. Work from ends, up.
5] when you have combed all you can, start picking apart the tangles with a chop stick. Again, work from ends up. Keep clipping untangled hair out of way. Be patient, listen to some calm music or a favorite movie.
6] when all finished, comb all through, and shampoo as usual.
7] NEVER shampoo, swim, or go to bed without combing hair, unless you want a buzz! It is a pain to get knots out, and BAD for your hair.

Some classic remedies include using peanut butter or mayonnaise on the hair. The oil in them helps loosen the knots.
It seems like you should be able to use straight oil if you wanted to.
You might also try a lot of really good conditioner, let it set for several minutes before you rinse it out.
Best wishes.

i had a client come in with exactly your hair
i had heard that biosilk was good but i had never tried biosilk before but thought i would give it a try

it turned the hair silky and soft and the tangles practically fell out of the hair
yes i did have to comb it from the bottom to the middle in small sections.. but it wasn't such a chore
I know i sound like a commercial.. but i would never use anything else for tangles.. use the boisilk treatment.. it's fantastic
google the product to find it in your area
good luck

You may have to go to a salon and pay them to get the tangles out. It may or may not take a long time getting them out. You could also get a really good conditoner and try to get it out that way. Get some spray in conditoner too. There is also this stuff to untangle fresh dreds,I'm not sure what it is called though. I would try everything I could think of before doing any cutting. Try the oil also. Good luck

Wow, what a mess! Sorry to hear that. This usually happens to weaved or extensions. Why don't you give creme of nature conditioning a try and have someone comb it out for you combing from the end and work the comb up. Wal-mart sells a very good detangling comb that I use on my own hair, weaves and extensions. If all fails, see your stylist for help. Good luck.

I'm a swimmer and that happened to me before and all I had to do was pour a bunch of conditioner on it and I left it on for 15-30 minutes and then rinsed it and my hair was silky again. Although detangler works great.

put deep conditioner on it. i mean saturate it. Put on a shower cap and go to sleep. in the morning try to work it out. If that dosent work, its too matted. You just have to cut your hair and start over

Hmmm, don't know. You could try some olive oil. Or make your hair wet and comb it very carefully.
