I know kind of a silly question. But my 4 yr. old boy grabs at his private part alot and he doesn't do it because he needs to go potty. No matter if we are at the park or home or store he just keeps his hand on it. I have tried changing the size of his underwear in case it was too tight and that was why. And I have spoke with him. It hasn't worked any suggestions??

Two avenues to choose from: 1) Ignore it and it will stop or 2) Gently have the "there are things we do in the privacy of our rooms" talk with him. On the Huggies website, they had an article about this exact topic a week or so ago. They suggested option 2 with some really good tips.

Hark! The cry of the male child's parents!

They all do it. Both of my kids are constantly fiddling with themselves (over clothing). I have no idea why.

Don't make a huge deal out of it, just calmly remind him to stop touching himself. Also, put boundaries out there: holding himself is only okay in his room and the bathroom.

It's not a sign he's a pervert in training, and it's not something that will happen forever.

honey boys will be boys. unfortunately there is nothing you can do about it. you don't have a penis so you don't know what he feels. I have a 4 year old and started noticing the same thing I started getting to the point where I would spank him for doing it in public. I now my ignorance made me do what was not right so I asked my husband why they scratched. He says it like when we move our bra throughout the day. It itches. don't tell me you haven't noticed you move your bra or at the very least your arms to try and scratch or make yourself comfortable in your bra. well hope this helps.

I never tell my boys not to do it, but instead I tell them that it's a private thing that they should only do in the bathroom/shower. Then whenever he starts touching it around ppl or in public you can remind him that it is a bathroom thing and he needs to wait. Keep consistant with it and dont' change your method of handling it as it will confuse him.

He's a boy, my husband is 23 and he still grabs himself. He even does it in his sleep. When he stayed with me in the hospital after delivering our first, I had to wake him up when the nurses came in...it was embarrassing but funny...

Males like to touch themselves because they can. All you can do is tell him not to do it in front of people. My husband is 40 yrs old & I have to tell to stop.

Could be someone has groped him and now he wants to get the same thrill since no one is around to give it to him, then again could have seen something on the tube. Stop letting him be around when you're watching your porn. If it is Neither of those, dont sweat it. He's probably going to grow up to be a rock star TWO THUMBS UP IF HE IS.

When my guy touches himself - I just say matter of factly. Get you hand off your privates please. You don't do that in front of other people.

Then I move on.
