This was given in an answer as the first commandment,

(1) “You shall have no other gods before me.” This command is against worshiping any god other than the one true God. All other gods are false gods.

I don't understand this, wouldn't a "false god" not be a god at all?

All other gods?

Are there many gods and one that says only believe in him?

A god is something you serve, spend alot of time for, is number 1 in your life.
In my opinion a false god could be your job, an addiction, internet, or anything that takes the place of the real god. Whatever replaces God in your life.

A false god is you something you talk to and seek comfort in. This worship becomes part of your daily routine and you look forward to your time of worship. You find time to be alone with your false god and are angry or frustrated when that time is interrupted. You make sure it is safe and will do anything to maintain your relationship with it. It calls your name and you come but the comfort you seek from it is never enough. It always leaves you wanting and perhaps feeling guilty or condemned. You have to cater to it because it is not self-sustaining. It only takes and never gives you what you thought it would; not really. So what are these false gods? Something man has erected and not the true and living God. We set them up all the time, even though God has forbid it. They come in the form of a delusion, not a statue, so we don't recognize them these days. They are socially acceptable, politically correct and everybody has them. What are they in the form of? Cars, TV's, gossip, money, drugs, cigarettes, food, sports, alcohol, anger, hatred, unforgiveness, wanting control, sex, pornography, computers, etc. Are all these things false gods? They most certainly can be. To some they are a stronghold that they cannot escape, nor do they want to. For others they remain in a state of denial that they even exist as a false god. (Well, at least not for them.)

Jeremiah 10:3-5 says this about false gods,

"For the customs of the peoples are vain; for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the ax.
They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.
They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not; they must needs be borne, because they cannot do evil, neither alsois it in them to do good.

Other religions or sometimes different groups of people have their own god or gods or goddesses. If you look at Greek Mythology there are lots of different gods. These gods are false gods meaning they are counterfeits and not one and true God. The God of the Bible is the true God; all other gods are false. The Bible gives examples of people worshiping other things: golden calf, statues, etc. These are false gods. Also, other faith's gods like Buddha, Allah, sun gods, whatever...I'm really not sure on all of them. They too are also considered false gods.

I just know I'm making a mistake by saying this, but to a catholic a false God would be like Budda, or the golden calf the jews made when Moses went to get the 10 commandments.

That's right, a "false god" is not in fact a god at all. It is something or someone that is elevated to the status of a god by an individual person or group of people, making it the central controlling factor in your life. It can be a fictitious divine entity, as in various forms of paganism; or something real like your career, money, drugs, sex, gambling, a relationship, etc. Whatever is the supreme controlling factor in your life is your "god". If you make your career decisions in prayer, according to the will of God, then God is in His rightful place. But if you relate to God only to the extent that He fits in with your career plans, then your career is your God.

Since the ones who worship the idols call them gods, then the natural term for their understanding is "false gods." Also, it would indicate anything that sets itself up, or that we set up, to be in the place of God.

Anything or anyone that keeps you from God is a false God.
Biblical examples include Baalim, Ashtaroth, the gods of Syria, of Zidon, of Moab and the Philistines.(you can study this in Judges, chapter 10).

In our modern and scientific world, they are not quite no easy to name, although I do have an opinion....

We can also worship false gods of:
fashion
youth
wealth
entertainment
pleasure of your choosing
even our loved ones can sometimes keep us from God.

A false god is whatever you put before God. Usually you put some measure of faith or hope into it, it is not necessary that you pray to it or have a church built around it

But there is only one Living God, the creator.

All monotheistic religions say that theirs is the one true god. There are many religions, some believe in many gods. There is in fact no such thing as a false god, because man kind cant prove which one is the true god. All in all it's just a matter of opinion

It means that you shall worship only one God, the true God and not worship any other being as your god other than him.
