The Greek word for church means the "called out ones".
Matthew 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church (ekkleÌsÃa); and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
ekkleÌsÃa; gen. ekkleÌsÃas, fem. noun from ékkleÌtos (n.f.), called out, which is from ekkaléoÌ (n.f.), to call out. It was a common term for a congregation of the ekkleÌtoà (n.f.), the called people, or those called out or assembled in the public affairs of a free state, the body of free citizens called together by a herald (keÌÌrux [G2783]) which constituted the ekkleÌsÃa.
In the NT, the word is applied to the congregation of the people of Israel (Act_7:38). On the other hand, of the two terms used in the OT, sunagoÌgeÌÌ (G4864) seems to have been used to designate the people from Israel in distinction from all other nations (Act_13:43 [cf. Mat_4:23; Mat_6:2; Jam_2:2; Rev_2:9; Rev_3:9]). In Heb_10:25, however, when the gathering of Christians is referred to, it is called not sunagoÌgeÌÌ, but episunagoÌgeÌÌ (G1997), with the prep. epà (G1909), upon, translated "the assembling . . . together." The Christian community was designated for the first time as the ekkleÌsÃa to differentiate it from the Jewish community,
The church is the spiritual body of Christ made up of all born again believers.
Ephesians 2:19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; 20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; 21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: 22 In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.
1 Peter 2:5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

The temple which the Jews built was made of human hands but JESUS said he would destroy the temple and build a new one in three days. This temple would not be built with human hands. The Church is the BODY OF CHRIST . .. the Church suffering is purgatory . .. the Church triumpant are the Saints in HEAVEN who are like SPIRITual stones that make up the TEMPLE which JESUS built . .. the Church Militant is the Church upon the Earth that is cultivating the fruits of the KINGDOM . . .
LOVE your neighbor as yourself.
Amen.

there are two types:
1. local congregations, such as the "churches of Galatia" (Gal. 1:2) which are made up of both believers and hypocrites (wheat & tares)
&
2. the eternal church, made up of the elect of God, all wheat, all the saved, as in Eph. 1:22

It is not a building, or a place. A church is a gathering of believers in worship.
