Let me ask you this, it is polite to have the wrappers, cans and chip-bags in the seat??!
Considering it's a friend - I would say clean this crap out.
Not impolite to move the garbage.
Buy them a car trash bag for christmas.

I always allow the owner of the car to remove items unless it is obvious that it is all garbage (soda cans and candy wrappers). Sometimes papers on the passengers seat can be important so I don't touch those.

Politely and clandestinely move the items (especially if said friend is sensitive. I try to move the items out before I even go pick up or think about picking up the friends.

I'm not going to sit in and amongst anybody's trash, no matter how good a friend or even a relative. I will quietly and unceremoniously move such clutter away from myself.

If the junks are on the seat, ask where they want them to be moved to before sitting on it.

Move em. It is rude of your friend not to move them before you even begin to enter the car.

I would NEVER get in to their car!
That kind of a mess is a certain
indication of how they drive. They
have a cluttered brain.
