Taxes for an individual are always for Jan 01 to Dec 31 of any calendar year. Probably if you got a job in December you wouldn't be earning enough income to need to file a tax return for that year, unless you got really big paychecks for that 4 week period.

The tax year for individuals is the calendar year, so in April 2008 you'd be filing for all of 2007.

For FY 07-08 or AY 08-09, you can still file ITR. If there is any tax due than the penalty is 1% per month since 31.03.2008. If tax liability is nil then there is no penalty. If ITR is filed after 31.03.2009 then there could be an additional penalty of Rs. 5000/-.
