Good question. A lot of new cooks, do not understand that there are two kinds of measuring tools. One for dry and one for liquid. Use a glass measuring cup for the one cup of milk. Set the glass measuring cup on your kitchen counter, and pour in the milk. It should reach the one cup, red line, marked on the glass.. Be sure and look at the line, at eye level to be accurate. For dry ingredients, like flour, use plastic cups, they come in 1 cup, 1/2 cup, 3/4 cup, etc. Dip the plastic measuring cup in the flour and level off the flour with the back of a knife.
When I got married, 53 years ago, I could not cook either. I got a Betty Crocker Cookbook, and I paid attention. The oven temperature, the time, being sure you mix the cake completely, this all counts toward making a good cake.
You will learn little things, as you cook. Like taking the eggs used in cake mixes, out of the frig, 30 minutes before mixing the cake. This lets them come to room temperature, and avoids any cold spots in the cake, as it bakes. This is all going to get easier and easier for you, and I just know you are going to be a really good cook. "God is in the Details."

1 cup is marked on the side of a measuring cup. If you don't have one, it's 8 ounces - a normal coffee cup is about 8 - 12 ounces.

You can take a bottle of water and look on the side of the bottle. It will tell you how many ounces it is. A 16 ounce water bottle holds 2 cups.

Pour water into the coffee cup until it's full - is the water bottle half empty? Then the coffee cup will be a perfect 1 cup measure. Dry it out and bake the cake!

You are not the only one who gets confused...but when you have time start playing with some water and measuring cups....

In my kitchen I have a variety of measuring cups...
some hold 4 cups....some hold 2 cups....and others hold less...

For you to learn about sizes and measurements it would help if you took one cup and filled it with water....to see just how much 1 cup is....

1 cup is made up of ounces..that is little parts of a cup
1 cup has 8 ounces in it

If you have a set of measuring cups
they start out with
1 cup
3/4 cup
1/2 cup
2/3 cup
1/3 cup
1/4 cup......

They make these cups to make measuring easy for busy cooks....

so if you know how many ounces are in 1 cup
you can figure how many are in the other sized cups

if 1 cup has 8 ounces
1/2 of that would be what?
4 ounces
so get the 1/2 cup .....and pour water in it..then pour that into the 1 cup the big one....you can see that you need one more 1/2 to make 8 ounces...

let's say the instructions say add 1 cup of flour to the bowl....and you lost your cup ...and you don't know what to do...without it......
so you look at the rest of the measuring cups....
you can use the 1/2 cup ...fill it once and you have 4 ounces
fill it again and you have another 4 ounces...
add them together and you have 8 ounces...1 CUP

let's say you lost that cup..the 1/2 cup...and you are left with the 1/4 cup .......fill this cup with water and pour it into the 1 CUP....count how many times you have to fill it.....to get to 1 CUP.???? it takes 4 fillings to make 1 cup....1/4 cup times 4 equals 4/4 or 1 FULL CUP....

lets say you lost all the cups but the 1/3 cup....fill this with water and pour into the big 1 CUP.....
now fill it again....and put in the big cup
is it full?.....NO...
so fill it again....
Is it full?
YES....
it takes the 1/3 cup......being filled 3 times to fill up the big 1CUP...3 times 1/3 equals...3/3 or 1 WHOLE CUP...

There are two types of cups for baking. The cup used for solids is the metal or plastic type that looks like a little pot. They come in different capacities, (i.e 1 cup, 1/2 cup, 1/4 cup, etc) The correct way to fill them is to add the ingredient (sugar, flour, etc) into it with a tablespoon without appplying any pressure to it. You have to over fill it and then "skim" the excess so that you have an even cup. The Pyrex glass measuring cups are for liquids.

How can it possibly be confusing ... right on the set of four measuring cups it says 1 CUP. the others are 1/4 cup, 1/3 cup and 1/2 cup. What are you going to do when it gets real complicated and ask for a teaspoon.

Maybe you shouldn't be baking, but you can buy something called measuring cups in any grocery store, wal-mart or target etc. They have one of those labelled one cup. That is what you use to measure a cup of something when backing. You should also buy some measuring spoons, to measure a teaspoon or tablespoon as necessary. There are also abbreviations for such measurements listed in any cookbook.

Well you can first start out by purchasing a measuring cup. Any WalMart/Target or baking supply store will have one.

Put the amount necessary in the cup and you don't have to worry about any confusion.

get a cup that says " 1 cup" on the top line (i'm assuming you already have one)
when you need a cup just measure out to the top line - not to the top of the cup
the cup will have other marks on it 1/3 cup, 1/4 (quarter) cup, 1/2 cup, etc.

There are things called measuring cups, go get yourself one and it will help you measure what ever you are trying to measure out to one cup or more if needed.

1 cup= 16 tblsp (tablespoons)=250ml(mililitres) (for baking purposes we round off to 250ml but in actuality it is 227ml)
when a recipe call for "1 cup flour" use a 1 cup measuring cup and level it off or scoop 16 tblsp or measure out 250 ml
most professional baking formulas the dry ingredients are listed and measured by weight not volume
