Everytime I fly into Atlanta, I notice that the American flag is backwards on Delta airplanes. Why is that?

It should only look "backwards" (stars in the right) on one port side (left?) of the plane. Just like a flag from the otherside?

You don't mention which side of the plane, but when a flag appears to be backward on the starboard side of the plane, (stars on the right, stripes on the left) the idea is to make it look like it is being blown back by the wind. That's why the flag on the right shoulder of a military uniform is sometimes "backward". It infers that the soldier is moving forward, like a good soldier should be. Same with the plane.

If you put the american flag on an aircraft the rule is that the far end of the flag (opposite the stars) needs to be at the aft end of the plane, so it looks like it is flying. Any other way would be wrong.

Just think if you had a flag on your car, attached to the antenna. Now you're driving down the road, think of how both sides of the flag would appear. Looking from the drivers side, the star field would be on the left. Looking from the passenger side, the star field would be on the right.

The flag is only backwards on one side of the plane. Like others have stated, it is meant to appear as though it is trailing in the wind.

The canton (where the stars are) always faces the wind.

It is the same if you are looking at a real flag with the wind to your right.

On a jet, the wind always comes from the front (hopefully).

Actually looks backwards on the right side, normal on the left just as it would if flying from a pole and plane moving forward

its because the stars always go towards the front....the same as looking at a flag....from one side they are on the left....from the other side the stars are on the right...

There is no such thing as a backwards flag, only an upside down one.
