Well, this is how most people divide Los Angeles:
Note: I am going to leave out political correctness to be truthful.
1) West L.A., or the "Westside" or "The 310" (area code): This is where most of the affluent, upscale residential neighborhoods are (Beverly Hills, Bel-Air, Pacific Palisades, Malibu, Brentwood, etc.) The area is predominantly Caucasian, with other small cultural groups...more info:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Los_Angeles_%28region%29
2) South L.A., or "South Central": This urban area is among the poor regions of Los Angeles. The region includes Watts, Compton and other neighborhoods notorious for crime. It is predominantly black.
More info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Los_Angeles
3) South Bay: a region in the southwest peninsula of Los Angeles. Here's a really good map to get an idea of where it is located: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:South_Bay_Los_Angeles.png
...Although it is in close proximity to South Los Angeles, it is culturally similar to West Los Angeles (upscale neighborhoods, predominantly caucasian). Neighborhoods in the area include Rolling Hills, Torrance, El Segundo, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, Palos Verdes Estates, etc. Many of the neighborhoods are coastal.
4) East L.A.: This is another poor urban region of Los Angeles that includes neighborhoods like Boyle Heights, Lincoln Heights, Montecito Heights, Eagle Rock, etc. It is predominantly hispanic, the majority being of Mexican descent. It is also an area notorious for crime, particularly involving Latino gangs.
5) San Fernando Valley, or just locally called "The Valley", or "The 818" (area code): Typically made up of suburban communities, including North Hollywood, West Hills, Encino, Tarzana, Sherman Oaks, Northridge, Reseda, Woodland Hills, Van Nuys, Calabasas Burbank, Glendale, etc. It is ethnically diverse.
For more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Fernando_Valley
6) Downtown L.A.: It is what it's name implies. The central district of Los Angeles. ocated close to the geographic center of the metropolitan area. The sprawling megacity is such that its downtown core is often considered a district like Hollywood, even though it is home to the city and county governments.
7) Hollywood: The famed district is situated west-northwest of Downtown. Even though it is a part of Los Angeles County, it is an independent city, like Beverly Hills.
More info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollywood
Well, that's Los Angeles and how the huge city is divided into so many geographically, ethnically, culturally, economically different regions.
Here's a basic map of L.A.:

Or if it doesn't work, you can always type in "Los Angeles Map" at Google Images.

You must buy a map of the area. Los Angeles county is 4000 square miles large. The city area is much less ofcourse. The most popular of maps is called a Thomas Bros. guide. All streets and cities and freeways are broken down by page numbers and grids and is fairly simple to use. Example = Page 45, Grid B-4. Not cheap mind you but much more detailed than a normal folded paper format. As far as the distance between Hollywood and Beverly Hills they actually border each other at the intersection of Santa Monica Bl. and La Cienega Bl.

It's probably a regional thing. Here in Central Mexico pico de gallo is a relish based on diced plum tomatoes, onion and serrano chile. Paletería La Michoacana sells a popsicle with similar ingredients to what you mention that is called pico de gallo. I believe I have heard of a Spanish version of pico de gallo that also includes fruits and vegetables in a salad or relish, but of course without the picante.

first....go online and find a map of Los Angeles. Then "YOU" can see where Hollywood is and where Beverly HIlls is. How can someone explain that to you without you seeing a map. East LA is a terrible area. Gangs, illegals, drugs, can't walk down the street. West LA is much nicer. Higher rents but a nice area.

Hollywood is NOT a separate city, as stated in one of the replies. It is a district of the City of Los Angeles. The mayor of los Angeles is mayor of Hollywood. The Los Angeles Police Dept. has a large station in Hollywood and is the LAPD.
