Go with the AK.

If there were an "Endangered Species List" for firearms in America, the AK would be on it. You'll be able to buy a good hunting knife with your own money years from now. The AK, perhaps not.

Besides, an AK that's all dressed up in pink is far more distinctive than any hunting knife--and there's room for Kalashnikitty stickers on the stock.

Take the AK and put a scope on it as soon as you can afford one. Assuming the AK is semi-automatic there is nothing wrong with hunting with it, just make sure your clip is legal size. Here in Virginia 5 rounds is the max for hunting clips, and since I only plan to shoot one time it doesn't matter to me how many the gun holds.
Get soft point bullets for hunting. The full metal jackets won't mushroom right.
The AK 47 does not shoot a .308, it shoots the Russian 7.62x39 round. I'm sure your dad knows this...

For grins and giggles I guess I would take the Kalashnikov, but to the guy who said use it for home security?? Unless you live in the middle of no where. When you shoot the home intruder and the bullet passes through them and kills one of your neighbors you will go to prison for negligent homicide.
The Kalashnikov is made to go bang, and reliably. It would be fun as I said. But to those that think it is a weak cartridge you better think again. Ballistics have it in the same class as the 30-30 Winchester. CZ even makes a bolt action rifle that is pretty dam accurate with the 7.62X39 and out to 150 yards it is adequate for white tail deer.
Personally I have always favored the 7.62 NATO or .308 Winchester.
On another note: 7.62 and .308 are the bullet diameters. I know you know that but someone had stated that they were completely different, realistically the .308 Winchester is 7.62X51mm. The Kalashnikov 7.62X39mm is actually closer to .311 caliber so if you reload with domestic 30 caliber rounds the chambering will be a little looser and thus not as accurate so I would not reload the 7.62x39mm but buy factory soft tip loads.

Oh my gosh, get the Ak. Please...do it for me. Like the guy above me said, the Ak will not always be around to buy. Demoncrats are pushing hard to rob that right from responsible people. If you can, act now. Knife shmife. "Oh look, I whittled this stick." If you are spending anything over 30 dollars for a knife, in my opinion you are wasting your money. Seriously, guns go up in value too. It is a way better long term investment. Over the past 100 years, guns have done just as well as the S+P 500. So get the gun, you probably won't always have that opportunity, knives are always going to be available...well, that is until all the guns are gone and democrats start classifying certain knives as Assault Knives. Plus you will look sooo bad a**.

And to people who say that they don't think much of AK-47's as hunting guns, I say good luck stabbing your prey to death.

AK-47 would be my choice. As others have stated you will always be able to buy a knife. The AK will probably be banned along with all other effective weapons in the near future. Get em while you can.

Heads-up!..my d-day is on the 21st (who cares..right?). an AK47 semi-auto shoots a 308 round and the is just fine for Deer sized game so nothing wrong with that.

My question to you is the price difference between the cost of a Knife and the AK-47. So I take it the AK-47 was your Father's and if that is the case, pick one of his 12ga. shotguns and then have a gunsmith refinish in camo.

Take the AK. It is not a gun that is my favorite, but you could use it to help you get what you really want.

Find a shop that sells used/second hand firearms and has a camo scatter gun in stock that you like. Take them your AK and see what kind of trade in they will do. A one for one trade is not very likely, but you could probably get a really good deal.

Good luck!

Not stupid to carry an AK-47 as a hunting rifle- no one
said to go full-auto when you see a deer. It may not be the most accurate rifle on the planet, but generally you can hit something with it if you can see the target. Practice- a lot.
And besides, how far can you throw that knife? :-)

A good hunting knife is hard to come by without spending a lot of green. Lots of cheap AK-47 guns floating around and there are certainly much better and more accurate guns as well. I don't think much of the AK-47 as a hunting rifle. So, unless you just like spraying rounds down range, I'd opt for the "awesome hunting knife"
