God pretty much spells out what He wants in the Bible.
I am a pastor I too am suspicious of people who make outrageous claims and say, "God told me to do it." God will never contradict Himself. Therefore if someone said, "God told me to steal a truck", they would be lying. God says not to steal.
When it comes to discerning God's desire and plan for your life I think it is this:
Love God with all your heart, love your neighbors as yourself.

It all depends upon what you mean when you ask "What does God want?".
There are clear passages in the Bible that say things about what God wants from us. But if you are asking what He wants in a particular circumstance that is not clearly addressed in the Bible then you have to pray and listen to the counsel of people who know the Bible and how to correctly interpret it.
As an example, God won't tell you if you should be friends with Billy, but He will tell you what type of people to hang around with. If you have a specific question you can write to me and I'll do my best to answer it since I serve in the Lay Biblical Counseling ministry.

Its ok to listen to other Christians and to pastors as some will have truth. BUt, the only way to know what God wants is to hear it directly from HIm. We have His precious Holy Bible which is His love letter to us, and He tells us jsut what HE wants and doesnt want. Takes time to study and truly pray and even asking God what He wants, the more you obey what you now know, the more He will show you and tell you. Just wait till the first time you hear the audible voice of God, wowowo. nothing quite like it and He is clear on what He wants. ask today began to study and pray and it will all come to you. The only way to know what He wants is in HIS word, not thru others that tell you what He says. Check all things otehrs tell you by the word of God and then you will always know.

I would stay away from pastors and Bible quoters and sit still long enough to see what the next right thing to do is, then do that.
Here's a sort of guide from someone who thought pretty clearly about this sort of thing:
"If it is not right, do not do it. If it is not true, do not say it."
Marcus Aurelius "Meditations."

It all means that if you want God in your life, that you need to ask Him personally. People all experience things that make them believe in different ways. Quoting from the Bible, some people, take and hold it dear to their hearts. It does have meaning for me.

You've requested a query like this earlier than... I can see you suppose strongly in anything that you're seeking to coach us. I suppose first we pray for ourselves... Prayer is continuously a type of labor, and after we pray for ourselves we're running for our possess temporal and religious salvation. After we suppose that we have got all we'd like (whether or not via non secular or temporal benefits) the normal feeling is to hope for approaches to go back the want, or for the vigour to support different men and women. Praying to specific gratitude and to invite for God's vigour to extra usefully serve Him IS an expression of a extra blessed non secular state... however all of us ought to make steps closer to that, and the primary steps that men and women make are simply as essential as those that arise extra alongside the course. Prayers of religion are continuously Good, IMHO.

God is everyone. We were all created from the same source.
God wants what you want. The best way to honor God is not to be poor or a martyr, but to have everything or try to obtain everything you want.

The foremost thing God wants is for us to do things that bring Him pleasure. We must apply sound hermeneutical principles to properly interpret the Scriptures to determine what the Lord wants us to do.

I don't think they are talking "for" God - I think they are helping to interpret and helping others to understand. Pray to God and hear what He wants for your life right from Him!

If God exists, he would have designed humans (and the world) with natural rewards...ie, it feels good to give to charity, or when we use rational thought we are often correct.
