To repent is to realize and make efforts to compensate for mistakes, ultimately in the hopes of being forgiven for error.

Religion has sort of commandeered the term, but the word has meaning outside of being sorry for sins.

Repent, the way i always thought mean this:
To examine myself and *acknowledge* my faults, to ask God to forgive me of them,
You really start under standing HOW much you have to be sorry for when you take the time to THOROUGHLY look at your SELF, take a hour, not 5 minutes after something 'big' happens. You learn more when you find the little things that you were doing wrong, it still effects the bigger picture of you.

Yes from the Greek word which denotes a change of mind i.e. a fresh view about God, about oneself, and about the world. Since we are born into conditions of mortality, repentance comes to mean a turning of the heart and will to God, and a renunciation of sin to which we are naturally inclined.

To truly sincerely repent is to SURRENDER all committed and unconfessed sins associated with your carnal flesh at the foot of the cross ("placing one's sins upon Jesus), and to request intercession of the Holy Spirit for the Father to forgive all one's sins and release them into His care. By His mercy and the power & authority of the blood and Name of Jesus, one will receive the pouring of the Holy Spirit within and all bondage from sin will be cleaved in the fire of baptism. All former desires and lusts of the flesh will no longer hold one captive, hence the flesh can no longer lead one back to old ways. The spirit is now leading. But repentance must be performed frequently to maintain spiritual dominance over the flesh. We need to feed the "white dog" more than our "black dog" to ensure this.

Repentance is a daily dedicated effort that strives to cleave the "old, self-centered man" making way for the "new, God-centered creature in Christ", to enhance one's personal walk with the Lord and to do His will for the glory of the kingdom.
