Automatic weapons are not illegal per se. They are legal in 42 states as long as it was made and registered with the BATFE before 1986 or was imported and registered before 1968. You can buy a fully automatic M-16 if, A) Your state allows machine guns (check here http://www.westernfirearms.com/wfc/default?set=06 ) and B) If you have at least $6000 laying around. If you are unable able to buy one for either reasons A) or B), you can buy an AR-15.
An AR-15 is an exact aesthetic copy of an M-16, but it is semi-auto only. These cost only around $700-1200 because they are still allowed to be manufactured, so there is obviously no short supply of them. They are legal in most states, except a few (California and MA are the only off the top of my head). Go to a local gun shop and you will be able to get specific info from a firearms dealer about your states individual laws and restrictions.

I bought a used DPMS AR-15, and I love it, it cost me only $500 and I got a $300 EOTech for it.
The AR-15 is the similar type of rifle, you've already heard all of that good stuff about full-auto weapons.
The AR-15 is legal in almost all of the United States. The restrictions in the People's Republic of California are that you can only use a 10-round mag, and you must weld the magazine to the gun and feed it from stripper clips (which just destroys the whole point of owning an AR-15)
You can find an AR-15 in online gun auctions such as Gunbroker, and you can find plenty in a good gun store in your area.
It's great for firing ranges and target practice, and it's sufficient for home defense.
If you want to train with a select-fire M16, take the Front Sight 4 day select-fire M16 class for $2000. One day for $500, and the two day for $1000 if you don't want to pay $2000.

It is legal to buy a semiauto version of the M16/M4 type rifle. However, it depends on the state you live in. California, for example, does not allow even the semiauto versions anymore.
However, if you're looking for a home defense weapon, I would suggest getting a shotgun - either a Mossberg 500 or a Remington 870. An AR-15 (the civilian version of the M16/M4) type rifle is likely to penetrate walls and still retain a lot of its energy, a shotgun not so much.
Check out Bushmaster, Rock River Arms, DPMS, and Armalite for prices and options on rifles if that's the route you still want to take.
Other options for states that still have an "assault weapon" ban are the Kel-Tec SU-16 (a nifty folding gun) and the Ruger Mini-14. Both are reliable, but only the SU-16 will take AR-15 magazines.

The civilian version of the M-16 is the AR-15. But from a practical standpoint I would urge you to get a 12 gauge pump for a home defense weapon to avoid any injury to innocent neighbors as 6 shot will stop a burglar cold but not blow through 3 walls. Then get yourself a real rifle; there are very nice Romanian AK-47 rifles you can buy for around three hundred dollars. They are reliable, cheap to shoot, very accurate, and they have panache. You can buy a remington shotgun, an AK-47 and lots of ammo and have money left over. Or you can buy an AR-15 and one bullet and spend all your time cleaning it.

Yes it is legal to save you a lot of time and headaches you should just get a AR-15 its the same thing but in semi auto and a lot cheaper as well.To buy a M-16 you would need a few thousand$ and a Class III license because these weapons shoot full auto or three round bursts. But a AR-15 is the civillian version of the M-16 and you can build one for around 650 or just buy one they start at around 900.I live in Pa and I dont need no permits for it,But Gun laws vary from state to state so you mite want to add that in your details or just ask someone that works in a gunshop.

You should buy an AR-15. They are exactly like the m-16 in every regard, except for being semi-automatic instead of full-auto. But, in some areas the local laws will allow you to convert your AR-15 into a full-auto. You just have to check the laws.

You live in Iraq or something? I would just ask gun dealers. Look for gun shows near by. I thought automatic rifles are illegal, but they might have semiautomatic versions of those. Which is probably easy to tweak I imagine.
But they probably have places you can get them. I know people can buy those big 50 caliber rifles.
