$2000 for some work my nephew did, he is a brilliant art student and I had to get it before someone else did. I am so proud to tell everyone that he did that when they see it on my wall. He was a featured artist in a jazz festival, and has work in galleries now in Savannah, Atlanta, Jacksonville, and New York. Oh, and I got that for cheap compared to what his paintings sell for now.

I'm a middle class housewife who paints portraits for a living but hugely admire the original work of others. It's not a matter of what I WOULD pay, it's what I COULD pay - I have kids, and bills, etc., but like I say I LOVE the creativity of others. For some reason $800 is my limit. That's what I feel like at this point I can come up with without jeopardizing the security of my household. If I was single and all of my income was at my discretion I would starve to afford a wonderful painting. Like I say, $800 is for some reason my cut off point - roughly one week's salary.

If I had the money, I can think of one painting I love and would pay over $20,000 for. Will I ever have enough money to buy it? No. But this painting means so much to me I would trade just about any material thing for it. If only my car was worth so much...

Nice is not a qualification I would use for a painting. Wall paper is nice. If a painting isn't GREAT I don't want it on my wall even if they payed me for it.
Great art (true love so to speak) I'd pay up to...$10.000 for if I had the money to spare and my spouse would let me.

A piece of art without knowledge of the artist...$100
A piece of art with knowledge of the artist and the artist's history...$10,000 or more depending on documentation and if I like what I read about the artist.

We paid $1000 for our wedding portrait in fantasy dress. We paid even more for a special headboard.
