It's perfectly natural for braces to hurt. When I had them back in high school I hated them, but they were well worth the pain.
The soreness will go away in a week or so, in the mean time, you can probably take aspirin or Motrin for the pain.
As far as the brackets cutting into your mouth, that happens too. Use the wax they gave you to cover up the brackets. It will help relieve the pressure of the brackets resting and rubbing on your gums and cheeks. You'll have to replace the wax occasionally as it will fall off or wear off, but that's ok. Good luck!

The pain will go away as long as you keep putting the wax over the areas that cause you problems. When I first got my braces on, the wax was my best friend. I hardly need it four months later.
It does get better, I promise you.

Use the wax they gave you to cover the brackets that are irritating you. This should help. They will give you more wax if you need it. Also, a good trick to try are things like chloraseptic, etc. that actually numb your mouth. Oragel has a p.m. formula that works good. Make sure to rinse your mouth with Listerine to keep any open placed clean and prevent infection. (Dental hygenist told me Scope does NOT work to prevent gingivitis, etc.) If they bother you real bad, then call the orthodontist's office and see what they recommend.

The wax never stuck for me- it would just fall off. They do hurt at first, but it does get better. I've had mine for a combined 3 1/2 years (two times of 2 years and 1 1/2 and still going). My brother had them on for one year, the other for two.
Good Luck!

You will get used to your braces in about a week. Yes, the wax helps. I wore braces for four years and believe me the end result is so worth it! Good luck!
