we only did when I lived with my grandmother. I miss those times. I loved it when the family was together and we would just sit and enjoy grandmas cooking and talk about school, work, or anything else that happened during the day. My mom, on the other hand is the complete opposite. She would leave us kids at the dinner table and go eat in her bedroom or in the living room and I used to HATE that. Spending time together as a family is something I cherish and she just kind of distanced herself from all of us when she would do that....
I think that when I have a family of my own someday that no matter how busy we get, we should devote at least 2 nights a week to having dinner together as a family......I actually enjoy that!

yes we eat at the table together. We also often have friends over that we have invited to dinner so we are always having fun and talking away and everyone is just full of laughter. However there is an exeption, it gets quiet when like a family member has died or a tragedy has occured bt other than that our dinner time is a time where we can all take a break from our daily duties and enjoy time together in the day. Its truly a blessing

For many years, our family ate in front of the television. It was horrible, we were total zombies watching prime time, shoveling food in our mouths until our plates were empty.
The problem with eating in front of the t.v. is that we became so engrossed in the show, we didn't pay attention to what we ate and we tended to eat too much. All six of us ended up gaining a ton of weight!
So, now we eat at the table most of the time. I was worried about awkward silences but our kids usually do most of the talking. It works for us.
That's the thing about families, though, no two are ever alike and what works for one family probably won't work for another.
Cheers!

We eat at the table but it is only me, my husband and my son. Very rarely , once a month at the most, my 18 yr old daughter will eat with us. She loves to talk so it is never awkward or quiet when she eats with us.

Yes; it doesn't matter if it gets quiet. Dinnertime is usually one of the only times of a normal family's busy day where everyone can finally just be together. At least, that's how I see it. It doesn't have to be every night - but it should be frequently.
XOXO,
Laurie

our family used to eat spread out across the house lol,
sometimes my parents would eat while watching the news, tv trays set up etc, i'd be in the dining room and my brother in the kitchen.......
otherwise my dad would be at the computer, my brother upstairs in his room, and me and my mother would be at the tv.....
the only time we all sat at the table, i think was thanksgiving and christmas........ lol it was sort of awkward.....
the worst part was, when me and my brother were living at home, we'd always be making fun of eachother and teasing eachother, and we'd laugh at anything..... it got to the point where all it took was a single funny face, or a weird look, or just us both realizing how stupid something was, and we'd bust out laughing...........
well one thanksgiving , my parents were saying a prayer, (we only said prayers before meals when on thanksgiving and christmas as well, since that was the only time we were at the table) me and my brother both felt so awkward, we just couldnt stand the silence, and having to sit so still, he was about 17 and i was 12....
we took one look at eachother, realized how awkward it was and started laughing out loud so hard!!! right in the middle of our family prayer! we couldnt help it lol.... my dad gave us such a warning look, that we just started laughing more, and my mother just didnt say anything.......
it was quite embarrassing lol, my parents didnt say too much about it afterwards, lol....

I live alone, my daughters are grown and have their own homes. There isn't a point of eating at the table.
Learn to tell jokes, it fills the silences.
