They'd compliment very well, Bjj was derived from judo, and judo from japanese ju-jitsu, bjj focuses on ground grappling, while japanese ju-jitsu also focuses on throws, and standing and ground grappling.

By cross-training in both, you'll be a more versatile grappler.

I have never taken either art, but I honestly think they would work well with each other.
Japanese jujutsus are usually ok all-arounders. The striking isn't as heavy as some other styles, but you learn ability on all fighting ranges.
BJJ is a very good art when it comes to ground work. I can't say that BJJ is better at ground work than JJJs, but I know it has more focus on that area. If you became proficient at both, the only range you would need work in would be striking, and that's only if you never really get into striking from the JJJ style. If the style of JJJ teaches you enough striking to get by, while you learn great grappling and throwing from both style of jujutsu: You would be in great shape for all ranges, in my opinion.
Good luck.

japanese jujitsu is a collection of tricks with no real underlying strategy, like if you happen to be in this exact situation you can do X. bjj is a system which gives you a strategy for what to do in every position and how to go from one position to another.

u can think of bjj as modern ju-jitsu
I don't see any real reason you can't train in both. Whether its striking or grappling you can always incorporate different things and evolve.
