The actual invention required many pieces, but here is a fact;

4th - 5th Centuries B.C. Chinese and Greek philosphers describe the basic principles of optics and the camera.

The first camera that was small and portable enough to be practical for photography was built by Johann Zahn in 1685, though it would be almost 150 years before technology caught up to the point where this was possible.

In the mean time a lot of people contributed to the technology so nailing down an actual date is obscure.

1840 - First American patent issued in photography to Alexander Wolcott for his camera.

He took the first picture of the rooftops near his house. When was the first camera invented? The first camera was invented in 1841. But the easier camera was invented in March 1885 by George Eastman. That's 44 years after the earlier camera!*
