The reason i ask, is because my 13year old son just had his first chemo treatment, and is afraid of losing his hair

For me, it took two days before it started and then it looks that ratty so I shaved.
After my initial treatment of eight months and remission I relapsed. I then recommenced chemo and I had a family portrait due. So I tried everything to keep my hair, scarves, caps etc. The morning before the photo I got my kids to pull it all out manually ( it doesn't hurt because the chemo kills the roots). That was 10 years ago this year and the kids still laugh about it.

The truth is if we weren't born with hair we wouldn't choose it. Tell your son, 'no one f*cks with the baldies'.

I am not sure about chemotherapy. My mom had radiation and chemo. And she lost her hair during the 2nd week of radiation. When the nurse told us her hair was going to fall out some time around the 2nd week of treatments, she was right! It all fell out at one time in the shower. In 2 days she was completely bald. The chemo didn't cause a single hair to fall out. She has a brain tumor and is on Temodar (a chemo pill). I think it just depends on the type of chemo treatment. Ask the nurse that administers the chemo, they will know best.

Sometimes the hair never falls out.
If you can tell me what the chemotherapy regimen is he is recieving, I can tell you more.
Most of the time the hair starts falling out about 2-3 weeks post chemo.
I would just prepare for it, maybe get some really neat baseball caps or dew rags. Actually no hair is really in now.
Good luck and hope your son does well.

some types of chemo dont have hairloss as a side effect best bet would be to ask the doctor. but my mom is going through chemo right now with breast cancer and she is on the 3rd treatment which is 3 weeks since she started and her hair has began to fall out in chunks so she just shaved it off. it usually wont fall off right away but within about 3weeks it will if its a side effect of the chemo.

I have a friend who had her first chemo in June. She was told she would loose her hair on the 12th day...she did. Like others here have said, it all depends on the chemo he is being given.

If your hair is going to fall out it usually occurs between the 2nd & 3rd treatment; but everyone is a little different. Some people don't want to be faced with it just falling out & they want some control so they shave it off at the beginning--its a victory statement!

It depends on the person and the dosage of chemo they are recieveing. Not everybody will suffer the same effects. Some people don't ever lose their hair. Hope this helps. :-)

Hair loss affects both men and women. Here are some natural remedies that can help boost hair growth: https://tr.im/4ZFJJ
While genetics plays a role, there are other factors, including: hormonal imbalances, an underactive thyroid gland, nutrient deficiencies and insufficient scalp circulation.
