Well, depends on your age group and what type of person he is but over all its:
They want to spend a lot of time with you
When you are with people, he wants to sit next to you.
He tries to make you laugh and smile a lot.
He listens and tries to help with problems.
It's a lot of little things, but something that you can do to check if he likes is maybe when you are sitting next to him, and his hand is not to far from you, put your hand above his and see his responds, if he pulls it away... well you know, if he doesn't and actually maybe gets red, or little bit nervous, then there is your answer.

He actually listens to the things you say.
He makes mental notes about the things you like.
He does little thoughtful things for you.
He actually calls you, a lot, and not just on Friday night.
He spends time doing the things you want to do.
He tells you things about himself and invites you to do some things he likes to do.
He respects you.
He can't stop thinking about you (sometimes he'll tell other people that and you'll hear it from a third party).
He loses his train of thought when he looks at you.
He stares at you and his eyes seem softer.
He introduces you to his friends and family.

He goes out of his way to be around you.
He changes habits to hang with you.
He calls you/emails you/texts you.
He remembers stuff about you - ei. birthday, fave colour, fave food and so on...
He gives you stuff. Even silly stuff like a pretty sea shell.
He asks you to go places with him...even with a group.
He compliments you.
He says we when talking about you and him. "We should go to the theme park some time..." and so on.
He asks if you are seeing anyone else or if you like anyone else.
If you say another guy is cute, he seems defensive about this other dude.
There are some good signs. :)

ok... if he calls you just to say hello not any real reason, he touches you just a lil more than most guys do...ya know he wants to give you a hug bye or makes up any excuse to hang out with you and tries really hard to hang out with you.
