Soy, wild yam and many other plants contain what are called "PhytoEstrogens." These are plant hormones, not animal hormones. They have only been recently discovered and have not been researched as much as some other things. Because of this, there is some bad (old) information on them and there are some "experts" who make very black and white assertions about them and their benefits or risks.

The most recent studies seem to suggest that these plant hormones may act as weak estrogens and block the negative effects of strong "Xeno-estrogens" like DDT and other organophosphate and organochlorine chemicals. This may not only reduce the risk of some cancers but may even block potential birth defects which are caused by these danger chemicals in our environment.
