Microsoft has always provided office software for Macintosh eversince Word 1.0 in 1984
Microsoft created Mactopia, a Macintosh Business Unit in 1997 with commitment for developing software for Macintosh for a five year period.
That commitment was renewed again in 2006.
It is also said that Steve Jobs pursuaded Microsoft to invest in Apple after settling its lawsuit against Microsoft in 1997 and agreeing to make Internet Explorer as Mac's default browser.
Mactopia is also one of the largest developer of Apple software outside Apple - an Irony !
As-long as .doc, .xls and .ppt formats remain dominant file formats in the business world, businesses using Mac will continue using Office for Mac and that's a lot of profit for Microsoft.

Microsoft actually fetches more money for a copy of Office than they do for a copy of Windows. So, it makes business sense for them to have a Mac version as well. Not to mention, if they don't, a competitor in the office suite business will. If someone else, say Corel Word Perfect Suite, has a Windows and Mac version, people may tend towards that if there wasn't a version of Office available for Mac.

Being a competitor doesn't mean they're enemies. The more people Microsoft can get to use their products, the better it is for Microsoft.
